Re: Oldest/Largest Established Groves in Washington State

Great idea! I hadn't thought of Kubota, maybe because I haven't been there yet, and also because I have recently visited the Japanese Gardens in the UW arboretum, and saw only one phyllostachys planting, and it didn't appear that old. Cool garden otherwise. So far, the places that seem likely to be ...

Oldest/Largest Established Groves in Washington State

Hi everybody! I am looking for large, well-established groves, the older the better. Also being in close proximity to wilderness or some kind of unaltered natural landscape is a big plus. Private groves, gardens, public plantings, anything that meets these criteria. I need some soil samples from the...

Re: How many rhizomes can originate from one point?

Nice! That is an insane rhizome explosion. What species are we looking at? How long has it been in that spot? Before you divide, think about taking the opportunity to answer a question I threw out in a post recently, that being if the growing tip of a rhizome is broken, will one new rhizome or multi...

Re: Camellia sinensis also known as tea

So, tea or camellia sinensis is very under-cultivated in the United States, it seems. Apparently, there are only two farms producing and processing their own tea in the US. One is in the Skagit Valley of Washington state, called Sakuma Brothers. They produce a green tea, an oolong, and a white tea. ...

Re: Planting bamboos that will be sold/traded in the ground

Thought about just potting them up in a huge pot, and burying them? It has worked for me, though somewhat accidentally. Potted up a bamboo, which earlier this year the group helped me identify as a aureosulcata aureocaulis , most likely, into on of those large blue plastic barrels that had been cut ...

Re: Accidentally severed rhizome on parvifolia

I think Alan means that you should be more empirical when showing photos to document what you are trying to explain and when you are showing the progress of an experiment. Data, more data, as much data as a guy with asperger's who also has severe OCD would compile if they were into bamboo... or just...

Re: Accidentally severed rhizome on parvifolia

Maybe its due to the fact that I have only participated in one online forum in my life, this being it, but am I detecting a somewhat incredulous response to the idea that a rhizome can be forced to whip-shoot? Or is there a significance in a rhizome turning to whip-shoot after being severed? I dunno...

Re: Above Ground Rhizome production

Seeing that the ingredients listed online are IAA, and a b-vitamin, it looks like they are using the same ingredients that are used in most rooting or cloning products. Also, IAA, and perhaps another of the common rooting compounds that are found in cloning gels and powders, is found naturally in th...

Re: Above Ground Rhizome production

forgot one thing, a piece of rhizome cut from one of the runners that I fumbled and broke the tip off of. It provides an idea of how many nodes on the length of the first rhizome pictured in the previous post.

Re: Above Ground Rhizome production

Howdo! I've been trying this method out, primarily with my bisettii, which seems to be one of the most profuse rhizome-producers I've seen. This morning I decided to to try this method on the phy. atrovaginata that I planted last year at my mom's place, with the promise that I would make sure to com...

Re: Sawzall in taking divisions

Yesterday was my second division, the first being the day before that. And being that I am constantly running late and missing appointments and so on (always shoveling manure onto the groves, cutting back the clover and alfalfa, turning big compost piles, and generally having a great time to the det...

Sawzall in taking divisions

Those who have experience taking culm divisions, have you found that a sawzall is a big help, or not worth the extension chords or battery packs? Watching the videos on YouTube of the guy taking divisions from a clumper made it look like a piece of cake using the sawzall, but maybe taking from runne...

Re: Above Ground Rhizome production

David, any developments with the great rhizome sled? I have started to use the same basic trick, though I utilized the top of a water bottle, and only got the bugger to curve 3/4 around the inside of the pot before it arched up and decided to whip-shoot, I believe in protest. If I had stayed on top ...
