Container vs planting in ground over winter

Post by Diane »

Is the best way to winterize bamboo in containers to dig them in the ground over the winter? Once in the ground, do you still need to cover them?
Location is ocean county NJ. Thank you!

I'd still try to protect foliage anytime you are forecast to get into the single digits, wind chill or air temp. You can wrap in blankets etc during cold snaps and unwrap when it passes. The goal is to make into spring with leaves that are alive.

It is also important that water can not collect in container and freeze later. If block of ice forms in container, plants will likely die.

@needmore
I shouldn’t wrap foliage after a few hard freezes, rather if in single digits?
Also burlap is ok or rather a blanket?

Think in terms of preventing the leaves from desiccating, which can easily happen with temps/wind chills below the low teens, and will certainly happen in the single digits. Assuming that as Dependable said you prevent the container from turning into an ice cube, hard freezes at 'higher' temps should not do too much damage but you can of course wrap them anytime. I just like to let them breath again during more moderate weather so you have the cycle of wrap/unwrap to deal with.

I like old blankets for that, burlap can let air in but should work. Have also used just plastic but be careful not to leave it on during sunny, warmer days.
