Borinda albocerea is mentioned here: http://thecloudesley.co.uk/about-bamboo.html

"I have in my collection Yunnan 2 - beautiful plant with powder blue culms, eventually aging to a straw brown-yellow. Leaves are mid-green. Extremely attractive but best in a sheltered spot in part shade. Cold hardiness is still not fully known but my specimens in pots have survived two harsh winters with little to no damage at all. Yunnan 3 is a slight variation with smaller leaves and is considered the type."

Thanks iain I have read this very helpful, although I am not sure which Yunnan it is, I have read cold hardness-8 to -20 c which is so broad it’s unbelievable, it should be fine here as I only get -5c here really but that beast from the east this year has done some serious cold wind damage

An Irish friend lost the top of albocera at -7c. Ian Connor rates this sp. at Zone 8a. -20 is ridiculous.

We had -11 °C this winter, resulted in top-kill. From my experience, it survives-7/8, but not -10.

Steffen, if your weather can be compared to our winter (Slovenia), which I think can be, winter did a lot if damage. We did have lower temperatures in the past with much less impact on bamboo. Moso fared better at - 17C than - 13-ish this winter. Same goes for my Phy. aurea, Borinda fungosa (gaolinensis?), and even Fargesia bamboos. There are two exceptions, though, Pseudosasa japonica and H. t. Shiroshima. These two did quite ok.

Did you observe similar damage?

No, I only had severe damage on this bamboo. Some leaf damage on gaolinensis, on violascens and on Kawadana. That's it.
Best, Steffen

In London E17 I lost it and re-planted, lost again and have given up

I can grow Damarapa, losing the top of new canes in a bad year

Maybe you’ll be ok but I reckon it needs Cornwall to thrive, shame the power & strength is great to see
