Fargesia ID?

Post by Garfster »

Hi all
I was sold a small bamboo as Phyllostachys kwangsiensis (!) a few years ago, stuck it in a corner and forgot about it.
Looking at it a few years later, it's clearly anything but what it was sold as!
Anyone able to ID my now mystery Fargesia? It's currently about 6-7ft tall, and nowhere near as tightly clumping as say F. murielae
TIA
Gary

I'd guess F robusta, only because that is the only Fargesia I have that regularly sends up shoots that far out of clump.

Check the leaf sheath where the leaf blade joins it for little auricles (ear-like flaps) and/or oral setae (bristles).

Neither = apicirubens (which is still often sold under the wrong name for it of dracocephala!).

Just oral setae = robusta.

Both, with oral setae spreading from tall auricles = dracocephala 'Rufa' (still often sold as Fargesia rufa!)

Leaf sheaths are shown in the 3rd picture for each
