Mystery phyllostachys

Post by grabhorn »

Hello, all. Last month, with a large-ish bamboo shipment, I received an extra plant. Great, but it was unlabeled. It's only a #2, so it's young. I sent a photo to the seller who said they couldn't tell from the photo but guessed maybe dulcis or vivax. It's now sending up a shoot. Any thoughts?

Is there a yellow stripe in the sulcus(groove) ?
Southern Indiana.
My Bamboo List.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

No, the sulcus is the same light green as the rest of the culm.

Doesn't look like dulcis or vivax, maybe it's rubromarginata. But the nodes look a bit pronounced for that.

It looks like you have a standard phyllostachys dulcis right there. It's a nice fairly tropical looking species, similar to Shanghai III, except culms will tend to umbrella out towards the top leaning towards sunlight. That smooth texture of the culm, and purple stripes on white along with big long leaves makes it most likely dulcis.

It looks pretty much identical to the smaller dulcis shoots I get on my grove which doesn't appear to have any intention on getting beyond 1 1/3 inches, maybe because it gets over 60% shade during the summer, and plenty of leaf burn during the winter.

How about Ph. violascens? The order in which it was a stowaway also included a violascens, and they look remarkably similar, the new culms on both looking very much like these:

Here's one of my mystery boo, taken today. Any thoughts from the experts about the possibility of it being violascens? Are there any other photos I could grab to help identify it?
