S brachycladum leaps

Post by needmore »

This guy was a farmers market buy of a 3 gallon plan around a year ago and it is leaping in size very quickly. A superb bamboo, maybe my favorite of all time, I have another that was a teeny 1 gallon less than a year ago and it is well overhead already. Beautiful foliage, tight clumper with very vertical profile. Amazing plant, especially given that I suspect I can propagate by culm cuttings. The only thing not to love is it will flower on a couple of culms, nearly year round, but no viable seed.

Second photo dated 1/9/21 is the same plant, in the background is the culled the B ventricosa that used to grow in the same spot...an upgrade for that spot I think!

Even if you don't have a whole lot of soil or compost on top of the top of your rock, if you have mostly lava rock which water can permeate, chances are that the roots can also grow through the rocks. I dug out a small pecan tree and found that many of its roots were able to grow right into the limestone likely because of chemical reactions and the rock itself being able to hold water. After about a foot of soil/ rocks where I dug, it appears to be pure limestone however after digging another 20 inches, I filled it up with water a few time and even though it didn't appear that there were gaps through the layer of rock, the water would disappear in a few hours.

I had a tree cut down a couple weeks ago so I decided to do a hugul kultur with the logs, branches and twigs that came from that tree however put in a cover crop until the 10 gallon bicolor is ready to go into the ground. Just hope that this bamboo can manage to take over most of the area I prepared within 2022 when I can add another ring of a meter or so to hugul kultur even more for the rhizome growth of the following year. I do have near 150 cubic yards of compost and a lot more tree wood so there's plenty of material to work with.
