I'm starting to see some upsize on small bamboo, here is Nastus elatus starting to show a more mature looking shoot, long tip blades. Clicking the photo will enlarge it and you can see the white powder near the top giving the blue effect that is known from this bamboo's culm leaves.

I look forward to seeing it with mature shoots. I have 7 species with new shoots in the last few days, one is suggesting a considerable upsize but we'll see, one is one an un-ID'd guy and I'm hoping the shoot displays adult features to see if an ID is possible.

Bambusa nana - original culm cutting is the older lighter culm, it produced a shoot to it's right that is around an inch and 14' tall, then to the left a slightly smaller one, and now two at once the first of the new two is an upsize.

Bought this plant labelled as Phyllostachys nigra, my money is on Gigantachloa atroviolacea which would have commanded much more $$ for the seller and I tried to tell them but...this shoot is hard to photo but appears to be quite the upsize.

Getting a great amount and some good upsizing on my F. Robuta Wenchuan. This photo is a couple days old now, but the plant has 29 new shoots (planted last year from a 15G pot) as of yesterday.

All my Phyllos are still asleep, Zone 9, still frosts at night. Can't wait to see signs of life.

The G atrov is pushing 2 more shoots probably about 1.5" diameter on a plant I planted in Sep then transplanted in Nov.

Bambusa chungii - the form I find here in Hawai'i seems a bit different than the one I had in CA, longer internodes, perhaps a bit smaller Unknown bamboo species #1 - vendor guessed D atter but the shoots don't seem right for that. Unknown #2 - both of these unknown appear similar but #1 has auricle 'flaps' extending out from the culm with oral setae and #2 has very flat auricles with less pronounced oral setae, neither photo shows this well. The vendor for #2 only shook his head and said it gets big, maybe 80' or so. D brandsii? Dunno.

Unknown #2 might be dendrocalamus sinicus dragon bamboo since your shoot looks very similar to my sinicus shoots. That bigger shoot that is fatter than every culm in the clump currently is about 1.5 inches in diameter. Since the picture was taken, it has shot up to 2-3X the height in that picture in 6 days. Its sheaths usually stay on for a very long time on this species however I like to take them off to make the clump look prettier.

I kind of hope that it is not D sinicus as that one seems a bit sloppy for me.

I'm noticing that many of the subtropical clumper shoots seem to rise much slower than running bamboo and also seem to take WAY longer to branch/leaf out, I would say that my B nana is an exception to that, this guy has really sized up and the shoots move pretty quickly. They do however seem to size up much faster than running bamboo, for example I'm buying mostly smaller new culm cuttings and on many of them I'm seeing 1.5" diameter shoots in 6 months after planting, the B nana was about a 3' single branched 1.75" diameter culm planted in Sep, it quickly pushed several LONG branches and then a shoot; now just a few months later it has 4 new culms the most recent are the diameter of the orig cutting and 16' tall or so.

Brad, things are looking good there in Hawaii. Looking forward to seeing how things progress there in the coming years.

I've hand cleared around 3/4 acre of dense fern and glory bush growth to exposed solid lava with about 2" of root mass/soil so that I can build hundreds of mounds in which to plant, planted a small orchard in fabric bags that I buried in mulch in hopes that the bags rot quickly. Dense tangles of vining fern that you can't walk through, cleared with an Ego battery powered hedge clipper and Stihl loppers - hours and bloody hours of clearing, you can buy a fern covered acre here for $40-50,000 or a guava covered one for $15-20,000, most people bulldoze everything down to the lava, then bulldoze and jackhammer the lava, then bring in tons and tons of smaller crushed lava to cover everything just to get a cleared acred covered with cinders to try and plant.

But the growth rate makes it worth it and in a year I expect to see some nice things going on, the bamboo in particular will add some interest quickly.
