Timor clumping Black Bamboo Won't Turn Black

I have several Timor Black bamboo plants that are 6 or more years old, 30 to 35 feet tall, and none of them has ever turned black. The parent plants I took these from were black and straight. Mine are not black and very curvy. Can anyone tell me what is wrong? I've been using 10-10-10 fertilizer and water them at least once a week.
