Yeah, the only thing that really bugs me is when they bite. They seem most attracted to Alphonse Karr more than the others. But the other issue is aesthetics as they enjoy farming aphids particularly on the seabreeze but also on the Golden Hawaiian, the latter of which is not quite suited to my zone in the first place so that's a slight concern. But on the other hand, it gives me more reason to keep the clumps thinned out of older culms, and I want to limit their growth anyway as they are not as tight a clumper as I prefer.I_am_Ian wrote:My property is completely infested with ants and I've seen them crawling over or living under most of my bamboos. They don't seem to damage them in any way though. I am hoping they are a sort of protection against mites or other enemies of bamboo.
Here's last year's culm of Golden. The lady bug thinks the ant is farming aphids for its easy meal
But here's the prior year's culm which I'll cut down this year after my new culms begin to leaf out
And here's a random shot of an angel mist coming up. The diameter of the golden posted above I think will be larger but this one is my largest diameter so far this year at more than 2 inches.
EDIT: added photo to prev page on striata culm. today was only partially covered in an ant hill. Could be they tired of rebuilding or can't keep up with the sprout growth.
