Poor Draining Soil

Post by ClariBoo »

I hate Texas gumbo.

I started digging last night to start planting my boos and now I see why everyone has raised beds. Wanted to get a little deeper but hit a layer that's almost like rock.

Rained this morning and a couple hours after the rain stopped there's still a small puddle in the hole. So I was wondering, could I dig the hole a little bigger/deeper and then pad the bottom with better draining soil, that way when it does rain alot the standing water will be below the roots/rhizomes instead of the plants sitting in it?

I was planning on using some soil from Lowes anyway, rather than filling the hole with the clay I dug out of it. My only worry is that with the ground around where I plant it, the boo may just behave like it was in a pot rather than in the ground.
Obviously I can't dig out the top 12" of my yard and amend the whole lot.

Any suggestions?
MT,
Daniel
