2009 Boo Shooting Diary

Post by bambookid524 »

It's about that time of year that every bamboo enthusiast waits for!
Shooting time!
May this spring bring everyone tons of new shoots, and may the bamboo-gods keep all the plants nice and healthy, as well as their owners! :D

Although it may be a little early, let's get this rolling now, because I'm sure there are some people out there who's plants are starting up, such as mine.

If you were here for Cactus Joe's "2008 Boo Shooting Diary" post, you probably already know what to do. He did a good job with that post, and it turned out great. Hopefully we can get another lively Shoot Log going here this year. :)

If you weren't a member at the time or haven't seen the thread, you should give it a look. It was a great thread and was very helpful.
Basically it's for everyone to report their first shoots, the species, location, and anything else they want.
Feel free to add pictures!
It's always nice seeing some nice shoots!

May everyone's shooting season bring many surprises, and tons of shoots!

Let the fun begin :D

So far, I have some small Fargesia Dracocephala "Rufa" shoots poking through the surface, and while repotting an Phyllostachys Aureosulcata the other day I noticed tons of rhizome buds starting to swell!

Within the next month or two, my plants should be kicking into high gear!

Best of luck to everyone else! :D

everything (i thought) i knew is wrong; i'll have to get used to it.
despite frosts last two night and last week...i found new culms today on Phyllostachys dulcis and P. aureosulcata"Spectabalis". and have seen several clumps of P. aurea both here and nearby shooting last week.
P. praecox is showing nothing. this is not right.

P. japonica. Also my B.vulgaris "Wammin" has sent up two shoots but it has X-mass lights strung on it and I cover it when ever the temp dips near freezing.

No shoots yet that I can find and I probably won't see any for three to five weeks.

The legal issues that will arise when the undead walk the earth are legion, and addressing them all is well beyond what could reasonably be accomplished in this brief Essay. Indeed, a complete treatment of the tax issues alone would require several volumes.

I was surprised yesterday to notice new shoots on a few bamboos. I really did not think they would shoot till maybe May here in central Florida. The winter was rough on them and defoliated a few including Lako, Old Hamii and Kimmei.

But....yesterday there were new culms on:

Psuedosasa japonica Arrow

Bambusa lako Timor Black

Bambusa multiplex Hedge Bamboo

Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr'

Bambusa oldhamii Giant Timber

Bambusa t. 'Ventricosa Kimmei'

Is that normal? Some of the bamboo took culm damage in the winter lows, burnt tips and such. I just did not expect the culms yet?? Some though like the multiplex's did not take winter damage but are still starting to shoot.
