How is the winter in Europe?
On the 'le forum' I see photos of bamboo in snow, has this been a 'normal' winter so far and not so cold, just some snow?

Re: How is the winter in Europe?
In Central Europe, We've had temperatures down to around -15C, but with around 30cm of snow, which protected most of the low growing plants. After that it was quite warm for some time, just before we got hit by colder air again that brought us almost 50cm of snow, which is now rapidly melting since it's raining cats and dogs for almost 2 days. After the rain is done, we expect some light snow and cooler air closing in beyond it. Hopefully snow cover will remain thick enough to prevent damage if temperatures do plunge low.
Most of the Europe at the moment is under snow cover. We've received warm winds in the upper layers, so there's a lot of rain that could easily fall as snow (like in England, Germany, France, Czech Republic, ...). Overall winter was mild with several cold blasts that were shorter than last year, without strong dry north-eastern winds and with much more snow (at least around here - we've had none last year).

Re: How is the winter in Europe?
Hello everybody,
In France & Belgium this winter is warmer than usual.
As temperature were mild there it was also very rainy. Also more than usual.
A lot of plants had been flowering from October/November until the begining of January.
In differents french forum, there are a lot of topics with photografs: as we were in Spring.
But finally cold has arrived !
One first "attack"... a small one went in the middle part of December. Freezing temperature were matched with this period, but not excessively cold.
There were "normal" possible freezing temperature for this time.
But sweetness of temperature came back just immediately after.
A lot of people had bet too hastily than the winter would be forgotten ! They were wrong !
10 days ago bad weather with low tempartures associated came back. It was colder than the first one episode.
In the major part of France, particularly in the Northern part and Belgium, but also in some places in the South, temperature were very low. Lower than "normal" temperature for the season but so probable that we shouldn't have been so surprised.
The winter is here with snow, black ice, freezing rain...
Transports are affected.
And some friends, at this time, still have their bamboos completely stretched out ground due to the black ice.

Re: How is the winter in Europe?
Yes, finally very cold here as well but it had not been so mild, just a little bit. Now the temperature will not reach 0C from perhaps Sunday afternoon last until next Monday with some nights approaching -18C. I see that the forecast says that February for eastern half of US will be colder than normal then March-April much warmer than normal. They predict that winter temperatures will end in February and a very early warm spring will follow - how cold will this be in February?

Re: How is the winter in Europe?
If we get a repeat of last March where it lingered in the 60s and 70s all the way up this far north, that will usually mean that many plants will wake up too soon only to be killed off or damaged as freezes are still possible too early in the spring. Here are the maps which basically says that above temperatures will linger all throughout the rest of the year.
