i dont have the expirence with the tropicals that several folks on here do, so I will leave it to then to ID what might be going on there. a few things might help speed it up though-
was it a new culm that you saw this on
when did you first notice it
what were the temperatures like when you noticed that happening.
I would tend to think its cold damage of a new shoot, but thats mostly a best guess......

This happened on most of my new culms. The weather was very warm at the time. Hot Santa Ana winds in So Cal.

Looks to me like a mammal or bug bite caused the initial problem then the rot set in.

is the shoot bent/broken or did the "disease" make it grow like that?
a link in an old post by flashburn seems to have as much info as anyone.
"looks like bamboo might have more diseases than roses" is the name of the post. dont know how to copy the link.

the photos are so small to see exactly what it is. Looks like the branches are broke off. Did some kids try to climb the bamboo?
OR
The culm looks like it was damage when young, got infected and has grown with scars. Branches fell off because they were damaged by something when young feel off later on as hard wood.
Is this a one time thing or is a spreading to other culms and continuing month after month?

after reading mikes post my first thought was if he had my kids, look for bb's in the wounds. im sure thats not the problem, with your bamboo, only with my kids.
