Some Random Photos Today

Seemed like a good time today to take some shots. Turned out to be a little too overcast, field was bush-hoged last week and looked better than it has all summer.

Vivax, came here as about 4, 2" culms. Last spring was 2nd shooting season, got 1.75" culms after the late freeze killed the first shoots.

Alan, the violescens from you is the one beside the tan colored tent building. I would guess the vivax to be around 25' but I haven't measured, looking forward to see what it will do next season. I put some names with the Shutterfly album but didn't get a very good photo of your Yunzhu. It's in a rough place.

Matt -- I never had violescens. It's iridescens. I was thinking I had three of those at one time and was wondering where that third one went.

I know atrovaginata also has the short internodes, but that species also tends to have much smaller leaves. If it wasn't for the huge difference in the coloration of the shoots, decora actually looks kind of like rubromarginata.

That "Kwang" you have there seems to be "clumping" way too long. Even the laziest runner I've seen started spreading out before making dense clump like that. Hopefully it starts running next year...

Other than the nigra & spectabilis why would you think someone could ID those green guys?

P Dulcis has prominent internodes, various sized shoots on the same year, huge leaves, short nodes, and an overall tropical look.

Kwangsiensis happens to be one in a handful of phyllostachys bamboos that have flowered recently, and this happens to still be a clumper.

Parvifolia has a very distinctive forum where culms tend to grow at a slant with an olive green color, tiny leaves, and all of the culms are relatively close to each other in diameter.

Aside from the colorful shoots, I don't really know how to tell decora apart from many other common green phyllostachys.
