My first removal/move of a bamboo in several years!

Post by Alan_L »

I'm about to undertake a digup-and-move of my Ph. nigra -- which I know other people have said is starting to flower. I had a nice little grove of this some years back, but it topkilled during a harsh winter so I removed it, and replaced with Ph. heteroclada.

As you may know heteroclada takes a looooong tiiiiiime to get out of the "shrubby" phase, and mine is just about there... but an escaped nigra rhizome has persisted, and I now have a 6-culm nigra "grove" right in front (to the south) of the heteroclada.

I have a place in mind, so am going to transplant the nigra to the other side of the garden. Incidentally, the spot I'm moving it to was formerly occupied by propinqua 'Beijing' (which flowered and was removed), which took the place of Phylostachys glauca 'Yunzhu' -- which also flowered. So I'm not sure that I'm doing the right thing putting this nigra there, but I just can't help it -- those tiny leaves are so great!

Wish me luck.
