Oldhamiai flowers?

Post by dependable »

My brother sent me this picture of his Oldhamiai from Maui. He was wondering what plant would do next.

Sure looks different from bamboo flowers I'm used to seeing.

Are those supposed to be bamboo flower petals that fell onto that shoot from above?

I called him and he says they seem to be sitting in or weakly attached to the tips of culm sheaths. He says they almost look like they were jammed in there. There are some little kids around, maybe they playing flower arranger. There is no other plants with blooms like that nearby though.

I was wondering if they could be some parasitic bromilliad or something, but kids will do strange stuff. My daughters used to do all sorts of creative things when they were little, & playing "fairy house" and such. I told him to let me know if he sees any more.

Crazy, it seems like they are not Oldhamii flowers but then again I've never seen Oldhamii flowers.
