Phyllostachys parvifolia in zone 5b?

Post by Plantsman »

I got a 2 gallon pot a few months ago and I planted them in the ground in a sheltered spot so the wind won’t blow them over immediately, I planted them around late august and I was wondering if they will do well? According to several weather data website our average coldest day is no lower than -3 F but I remember it getting to -18 F a few years ago and -30 if you include wind chill.

My advice is to baby that plant the first couple of winters: tarp over it so it is not exposed to cold winds, and so that heat from the ground will help keep under-tarp temperatures higher than outside. Your goal is to keep as many green leaves on the existing culms through the winter so that you get an upsize in the spring.

Search this forum for details on how people tarp their plants.

Yeah I have some bamboo right now that all dies over the winter but it’s mostly zone 6 stuff and I had heard that parvifolia is extra cold hardy. I’ll try covering the park folks in a tarp this winter and see if it helps.
