Bambusa chungii

Post by Roy »

My Bambusa chungii gets larger than the 30 feet by 2 inches, but that may just be the Florida Viagra water. Anyone else having bigger than expected growth on their Bambusa chungii?

Roy my chungi is still small but...I had it in a #15 pot last year and it only had half inch maybe 5/8" culms. It hated being potted 4 out of 5 choots would abort and it did not increase in size. This spring I divided it planting half and the half in the the pot still is acting pissy. The one in the ground sent up a dozen shoots with the largest going an inch and a half and no shoots aborting. The tallest is about eighteen foot. Thats more than tripleing in size in one summer.
Will try and remember to tell you what it does next year but it sure seems to want to catch up with yours.

In the ground B. chungii definitely "upsizes" quickly from one set of new culms to the next set.

Nice pic Roy! Man I miss that plant. Shame it would die up here in East TN.

Tom,

You ever thought about keeping one as a house plant? :D

Good to see you posting at the Bambooweb.info bamboo forum. We sure miss you down here in Florida. The FCCABS sure could use your energy and organizational skills. FCCABS hasn't been the same since you left. I guess I could say the FCCABS "hasn't been" in the last few years. I think only those who know the "secret culm shake" get any information about the organization.

I just went into Outback* and measured my largest diameter B. chungii from last Summer's growth and it measured 2.6 inches. Bigger than my B. textilis growing right next to it.

*Outback=I've always worked a lot in my backyard, so many years ago my wife would ask me "Where are you going?" and I would say "out back". So now my back yard has been know to the family as the Outback for the last 30 years. Wal might appreciate that one.

I can imagine how the name would stick Roy.... Most of my plants are around our bird aviarys, and due to wildlife, we have a 6' fence around that section of the property... not sure how big it is, an acre or a bit more. Everyone has taken to calling it the "compound"... I can just see one of the kids telling a teacher at school "dad spends most of his time in the compound"

the nice thing about it is that the kids cant get to the new shoots behind the fence! Cant say that about the boos by the house.......

I have a clump that put out several culms in the 33' range. How do I know this you ask? Last November I did a division on it and took 13 culms and potted them. Two of them measured 33' from the ground to the tip.

Out of the original 13, 4 of them aborted. I sold 2. Some of them I topped to any where from 8' to about 12' and the "topped" divisions have recently put up shoots! The 33 footers have not put up shoots but are still living. Two of those are in 3g pots. I'm amazed that they're still alive.

my chungii is just 2" so far. well have to see if they upsize again next year.
our neighbors keep wolf/dogs so that end of the property is known as" wolf mountain". the clearing where my kids tore up big four wheeler donuts is the "crop circle". the area where we have our firepit is called "cowboy camp".
and the little screen room that overlooks it is "portlank"(the kids came up with that i dont know what it means but it stuck)
I guess its easier to name an area than describe it.
