Leycesteria formosa (Himalayan honeysuckle)

Post by iain »

Leycesteria formosa is a shrub that wouldn't look out of place in an exotic style or jungle type garden. Under ideal conditions it can grow to almost full size in one season, a great spacefiller. Not unlike bamboo its stems are made up of nodes and internodes. I prefer the common name Himalayan honeysuckle. Robins and blackbirds appear to love its berries, carder bees and hoverflies the flowers. It is quite a sight to see a berry disappear into a robin's diminutive beak. If the plant has a downside, it does seed freely, although these are easily pulled.

As it wasn't thinned this Spring the leaves were smaller.
