Re: Weird Weed

It doesn't match the description of Asplenium rhizophyllum. I'm thinking it might be some species of Lygodium.

Re: Weird Weed

Wow, doesn't really look like fern. Perhaps fern that is a couple of millions age old. Photo from bit more distant position might be in place. Are you sure it's fern? Does it unfold each "leaf" the way other ferns do it? At least around here, I haven't seen anything quite like it. Yes, th...

Raddia brasiliensis

I had mentioned elsewhere that I have verified my suspicion that Raddia brasiliensis can be propagated by its tiny culms falling over and rooting. Anyway, the Raddia in this picture was not intentionally planted in this pot, but spread to it from another pot. And the big plant is some sort of palm r...

Finally got around to taking some pictures or it. Does anybody recognize this fern?

Re: Propagating B. textilis var. Gracilis

I've propagated Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata' from cuttings if that helps. Based on what I've heard, read and seen in videos, here is what I've been lead to believe about propagating from cuttings. I think this information is somewhat close to right. 1) The cuttings should be over a year old for best r...

Re: Making things from bamboo

I'm not surprised by the bamboo shrinking while drying, most wood changes size as it loses/gains moisture.

Re: Making things from bamboo

If it helps I've found that Brad Point Bits drill very nice, clean holes in bamboo.

Re: Making things from bamboo

Those are pretty awesome. Do you have any tips? How do you dry the bamboo without it cracking? Basically just let it sit until it turns tan, if it is going to crack it will usually have done so during the drying. Cracking can be minimized by punching out the nodes with a long metal rod. If you do s...

Re: Making things from bamboo

I've made bird houses, boxes, shelves and clock faces out of bamboo.

Re: Overwintering indoors with a big light

I have had pretty good luck over-wintering plants using fluorescent fixtures containing GRO-LUX bulbs. With a large light emitting surface the light intensity only decreases slightly with distance. Instead of an Amorphophallus titanum you might try a Dracunculus vulgaris. While last Winter set it ba...

I got them yesterday. They looked a bit wilted so I watered them to see if they perk up. I think they will.

Okay, they will go in pots as soon as I get them. I actually have room for them under the grow lights this Winter. BTW, if anyone wants some Hardy Orange Flying Dragon seedlings I have a few spares. :D

Re: Gynostemma pentaphyllum

A bit of an update. I never got around to planting them outside again this year. I've lost a few of them, but most have survived and I find that they root easily and are migrating from pot to pot to become companion plants whether I like it or not. :?

None of the vines have bloomed.

No ripe fruit yet.

I did trade for a white passion flower vine which I have potted up for the Winter.
