Re: Suggestions for Zone 5-bamboo newbie!
From the CBG Richard Hawke said in his letter "the best Phyllostachys in our trials was P. nuda but P. bissettii was very close". And in the report of their 1987-1992 trials "within the test group the majority of plants showed complete rhizome and root hardiness. Conversely, with few ...

Re: Suggestions for Zone 5-bamboo newbie!
The Botanical Garden in Chicago did bamboo trials back in the 80's and reported their findings to me in a letter. I may be able to dig that letter out. As best as I recall Pleioblastus viridi-striata was their best performer back then, not so the Fargesias. Perhaps it would be better to get more rec...

Re: Thamnocalamus
johnw Before I spend a hundred bucks driving to the Valley and back, do you know of any locations I should visit that have bamboo for sale (other than tissue culture plants)? Home Depot - only the Dartmouth Crossing store - has Rufa 'Green Panda'. Also most Sobey's garden centres have it as well. T...

Re: Thamnocalamus
It was Briar Patch. I am now doubting if it is in fact a Thamnocalamus at all. It must be a tissue-cultured plant as it has many, many canes and is severely congested. It's too small to show the typical culm sheaths of crassinodus. My thought that it is mislabelled is now increased as you say it is ...

Thamnocalamus
Just picked up a Thamnocalamus crassinodus at a local nursery. I wonder what experieinces you've had with this one. In a 10 litre pot so I will have to bulk it up before trying it outside. They were also selling Borinda angustissima but they appeared to be quite dead which is really no surprise. Pro...

canadianplant - Booshoot may not ship, as well you may have to be a wholesale customer. An acquiaintance works for them.

Re: Bamboo world customer service sucks
johnw You were lucky to get that seed and it must have been hard work collecting that seed and distributing it. I've seen the bamboo at Cornhill. It is still very small but very much alive. It's in the heavy shade of a building. TC tncry - It was not so difficult collecting the murielae seed. Judgi...

Re: Bamboo world customer service sucks
re: "I also love how you know where they came from and which clones they might be." tncry - To answer the above, I keep records of all my past receipts, purchases and/or acquisitions. In the late 1970's or early 80's (have to check the date in the files) the Arnold Arboretum in Boston sent...

Re: Bamboo world customer service sucks
Can you recommend any reliable american sources that ship here? The only ones I am familiar with are Bamboo Garden, Connor Bamboo and Booshoot. I have dealt with others quite a long time ago but don't know the state of affairs now. Try the source list: http://www.bamboo.org/BambooSourceList/ShowFil...

Re: Boo shoots for 2012
First shoot today on Phyllostachys aureosulcata near Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. The plant is about 17 feet high, not bad for this climate and a Phyllo. The large culm is last year's and not expecting any large ones this year after last summer's coolness and persistent rain.

Fargesia dracocephala 'Rufa' size
The Northeast Chapter site says of Rufa: " It grows into a large clump (6-8 ft wide) with arching stems. The maximum height is 10 ft. maximum and culm diameter is 0.5 inches. USDA hardiness zone 5-9. Originally from Gansu, China, " My Rufa from Kimmei is already 3 meters (9+ft) or more acr...

Re: Bamboo world customer service sucks
tncry - Are you experiencing all this damage on your bamboos in NB or PEI, I'm not clear in which province. North or south - east or west? Southwestern NB should be okay for nitida, murielae and rufa. If it's PEI where in the Province are you seeing such damage even when protected? I ask because my ...

Re: Bamboo world customer service sucks
has anyone had any complaints about bamboo worlds customer service? I placed a 800 dollar order and they stuffed my dead looking plants in boxes. I tried calling them and emailing them and it seems useless. Has anyone else have this problem? The plant I got was fine size-wise however it was badly i...
