Re: C. Gigantea

Fred sent me some seeds. Most were empty, missing the grain or it failed to develop, the grains that did look ok failed to sprout. Perhaps someone else had more luck.

Re: Latest Phyllostachys to shoot?

Phyllostachys aurea is just starting. This year, it's extremely late. Moso and Phyllostachys arcana seedlings are already branching out. Some of my bamboos are one month behind their usual schedule, the only one that wasn't affected by our unusually cold spring is Borinda gaolinensis seedling. It's ...

Re: Whitening of Canes during spring

If one shoot appeared, more will follow, I am certain. Next year. This season it will most likely channel all the available energy into growing healthy root system. You should be able to see the rhizomes crawling around during summer. Mulch around it, it promotes rhizome growth closer to the ground....

Re: bamboo damage from Feb 2021 polar vortex

Wet / dry. There it is. You've had snow and clouds most of the time, with only one day of sunny weather. Sun and dry NE wind are the real killers during the winter. cold alone can damage bamboo, but if it's combined with sun or wind, the damage is way worse. Like I mentioned earlier, northern side o...

Re: New Alphonse Karr Not Looking Great

I've seen similar (or same) damage on my bamboos as well, but not nearly as much as on your photos. I think I'll try using some kind of fungicide to treat them. Especially if the weather remains wet and shitty like it was last 4 months. (and each and every spring/early summer for the last 6 years).

Re: Seeds available

Alan, without the dormancy, it won't even bother shooting. Usually it just sends out whips grom infinite rhizome growth. Seen it with the super aggressive Phyllostachys arcana seedling. Sadly guys I gave it to managed to kill it. If they would plant it outside (like they said they would), I think it...

Re: Seeds available

Just an update if anyone is interested and following the thread. None of the seeds I tried growing sprouted, except the super-fast Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' seedling. I've had issues with that seedling as well, when I brought mites home from work. They managed to decimate two of my Hibiscus rosa-s...

Re: Wounded and broken - signs of life - what to do?

It could be Phyllostachys autesulcata 'Spectabilis'. If culms are glabrous, it could be Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillonis'. There are other Phyllos looking similar or identical, but at this stage, it's impossible to id it. Thicker culm texture could be the best bet to tell, but it is most likel...

Re: Seeds available

I use regular potting soil, mixed with perlite. Every couple of weeks I water it with diluted liquid fertilizer (around 3/4 of recommended solution). The only seedling I have is under serious mite infestation. I'll go and buy something to tackle those little sap suckers. They almost destroyed my Hib...

Re: Is it a bambusoides?

I've seen Phyllostachys aurea sold as everything you can imagine, that's why I asked about congested internodes :D I think you should wait and check the shoots. Culm wall thickness would also be a good option to determine the difference between vivax and bambusoides, but it's way too early with juve...

Re: Is it a bambusoides?

Is culm texture rough on touch, like sandpaper or is it smooth, almost glossy?
Are the internodes at the bottom of the culm, near the soil level congested, somewhat deformed and short?

Re: Seeds available

I have had 0 success with Chusquea too. Not so good with Phyllostachys nigra as well. Only got one from P. nigra 'Henon', but that one is doing extremely well.

Re: Seeds available

Any new info? I haven't got any other seeds to sprout. The one I did get was kind of a miracle.
It grows nicely and has added additional shoot lately.

Re: Black (Phy. Nigra) Bamboo blooming, what to do?

Did they set seeds? Are there only a few viable seeds, and most of the flowers give empty or non-developed seeds?
I have asked a few people here if their Phyllostachys nigras are flowering and they are not. It might be an overture into flowering?
