Re: Seeds available
I just want to thank Fred for sending seeds out for germination trials. None came up the first time around, planted in growing medium, in cell pots. 24 per species. They were kept damp, but outdoors. Temps mostly in 60sF. I just planted the remaining seeds, and it looked like none of the Henon seeds...

Re: How do I know what bamboo I have?
Pretty sure you're right. If you were up north in the tropics, then I'd wonder if it was P nigra, but if it gets close to frost where you are, it should do well there. To post photos, I think you need to re size picture into smaller pixel format with a photo program and drag into "upload attach...

Re: How do I know what bamboo I have?
If it is a Phyllostachys(which is a genus), it is not necessarily P nigra(a species of Phyllostachys). The best way to identify one species of Phyllostachys from another is to see color and pattern of newly sprouted culm sheaths(the outer covering of new shoots). However, if it is a Phyllostachys, a...

Re: Bamboo in Alaska
Too much work for what is essentially an experiment, in my opinion. Bissetti seems like one of the more bitter Phyllostachys shoots too, not a popular choice for critters to chomp around here.

Re: Seeds available
Has anyone planted these and got germination? It has been over two weeks since I planted and have seen no sign of sprouting from the three types.

Re: Bamboo in Alaska
Don't know about moose, once in a while the deer chomp a few new shoots, and the squirrels and ground rodents sometimes take to them, but have not seen much eat the plants once they are up and out of ground. The shoots from bissetti are not a favorite of the animals either.

That is a pretty cool device, the ingenuity is impressive, even if it might not be practical on a large scale.

Re: Companion plant inside bamboo planter
It should not disturb bamboo in short run. That said, it is going to get over crowded and root bound with bamboo alone in that container pretty quickly if it is the "red margin" bamboo you referred to in other post. Most running bamboos don't do that well in container over time, unless tra...

Re: Winterizing a container
If your container has good drainage, be sure soil is moist right up until hard freeze. Bamboo does not need to be covered until then either. You don't have to wait until official spring, you can even un tarp if there is a mild spell, but it is easy to get caught out and frozen. P rubromarginata shou...

Fertilizer now will go to rhizomes and help build up for next spring's shoots.

Re: Winterizing a container
I've successfully overwintered containerized bamboo by laying down and covering with tarp for the worst part of winter. Two key things to avoid are wind desiccation when the plant has no means to transport water to leaves, and freeze thaw cycles in roots if they are in too much water. If container b...

Re: Bamboo in Alaska
If you do, let us know how it goes. P bisseti does well in zone 6 and even is OK in some zone 5 locations, or so I have read. In 7a it is a very happy and rampantly growing bamboo.

Re: Bamboo in Alaska
I doubt any bamboos would take the climate. The only one even worth trying might be Phyllostachys bisseti, in a sheltered place. Even if it survived, it would probably be killed to ground regularly, so it would not amount to much.

Re: Seeds available
Hi Fred,
Hope things are OK with you fire/smoke wise.
I got seeds this weekend, hope to get some planted today. Will report on germination rate.
Thanks, Jon
