Re: Borinda albocerea
An Irish friend lost the top of albocera at -7c. Ian Connor rates this sp. at Zone 8a. -20 is ridiculous.

Re: Growing Bamboo in Southern Indiana
We grow Rufas in a garden righ ton the coast, the soil is extremely rocky with some soil atop. A foot of soil would be a generous amount in that area! Rufa does very well but then again the night fogs, the lack of summer heat (78F is a heat wave) and low soil temperatures are a very big help. A coup...

Re: Recommendations Please
dp - Your info on Campbell is spot on. I've seen a few burnt leaves around +5F in Zone 7b so it's definitely touch and go.

Re: Winter Damage
Alan - On the other hand we had a very mild winter except for an short arctic blast in late December. One night with a very brief -17c (0F) of an hour or so. Still P. aureosulcata 'Aureocaulis' looks much like yours, about 20% brown and that on the east side and the east wind is mild oceanic here so...

Re: Bamboo seeds
Deane No reports of local old generation F. nitida flowering of late. "Dependable" had two old nitida cultivars flower and die about 5 years ago. They produced viable seed but the seed would be toast now. Tarzanus as well as others had mislabelled Fargesia/Borinda? spp. seed a few years ag...

Re: Bamboo seeds
I've heard of no recent flowering of a Fargesia species. After a year the seeds would be of questionable viability anyway.

Re: Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon'
Though the Phyllos had a fair number of mites it was the Fargesias that were particularly badly affected.

Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon'
Just back from a speaking tour on the west coast. Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' seems to be the most common planted Phyllostachys. We saw these: 1-3 Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' at the O'Byrne Garden in Eugene, OR, note on the left side of photo 2 how the small trench with running water successfully st...

Thanks. Didn't realize that as it (Large) works on other sites without a problem. If one changed Large to Medium I wonder if it would affect the size of the photo posted? Your method is likely better in any case.

Re: Fargesia Murieliae ‘Tauro’ ????
Deane - You will notice the leaf in question has a series of rectangular white marks on the upper surface. These marks are blocked by that leaf running diagonally in the photo as luck would have it. Those rectangles correspond to the mite web nest on the underside, you will surely need a hand lens. ...

Re: Fargesia Murieliae ‘Tauro’ ????
A quick google of Fargesia 'Tauro' also suggests it is a robusta rather than a murielae.
By the way there is a very suspicious leaf (the large central one running vertically) which indicates possible bamboo mite damage. See the pic.
