Re: Rare clumpers

F. nitida is perfectly hardy here in Nova Scotia Z6 and I have seen it thriving in Z5 to our north in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Cool summers, especially cool nights, are imperative. johnw Most do well at my place now as far as fargesia. They really need shade but the heat doesn’t both...

Re: Rare clumpers

Cooper12, I think that Leo gave great advice here recently regarding growing Fargesia, it was the same advice I had received and ignored years earlier. In particular the soil PH, keep that in mind at your new z6 if you get them, I suspect it enhances hardiness. I read something about slightly acidi...

wondering if Sinobambusa intermedia will do ok in 6B/7A ?
Also Semiarundinaria fastuosa good in 6A/7B ?
or just stay with Tonkin Cane since to me its nicer when established ?

Re: discussion on multiplex vs runners

if you go with runners I really like semiarundinaria faustosa. Its really upright pretty drought tolerant . It has deeper rhizomes than phyllostachys though. I also like Sinobambusa tootsik though you may be pushing hardiness

Re: discussion on multiplex vs runners

Heres my thoughts living in a zone 8. First off anytime you push zone limits on a bamboo starting with a small plant or division is tough. The plants do not have a lot of rhizomes so your more likely to sustain winter damage at higher than minimum than expected temperatures. A thick layer of mulch w...

should also note the variegation is minimal. the few stripes are like fine pinstripes . not sure if it will get larger stripes or not.

Jason did get your Joseph de Jussieu? I have it coming from France at the moment I am interested what the difference from suow is, from what I have read they seem the same but I am sure there not, but it will be nice to compare the actual plants yeah it seems similar but occasional white/cream stri...
