I would leave it out there, but give it some protection in the winter.

Re: oZboo 2012

... I get excited every time I find a new shoot, I wonder when that amazement and pride will wear off. When you realize that every square inch of your land is covered bamboo :) I think you should get decent size bamboos in 5/6 years. You can also pamper some of them with manure/compose to get faste...

Re: New Bamboo Bench project

Look good. A bamboo bench beneath a towering bamboo grove would be nice.

Re: oZboo 2012

Quite an extensive collection...albeit tiny specimens. Even though bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants, but when we start out with tiny ones, it just doesn't seem to be growing fast enough.

I bet your place will look amazing in a few years... a few years too long eh?

Re: Upsize pics 2012

I mulched it, wrapped it pretty much air tight, then placed a bucket over it, and then another layer of plastic wrap. The bamboo plant itself was small and weak to begin with, and the grasses around it had grown just as tall and really thick. I thought wrapping the grasses along with the bamboo can ...

Re: What is this bug on my Madake?

When you only have a few individuals, lady bugs can keep them in check. But what you have is an infestation, and lady bugs can only eat several aphids per day, unless you have an army of lady bugs, which is not likely to happen. You're better off killing the aphids yourself. Spraying with water will...

Re: What is this bug on my Madake?

These are aphids. They can reproduce pretty quickly. They live by sucking sap from the plant. If your bamboo grove is not too large, you can spray it water often to keep them under control. Spray the ground afterwards too to wash away those bugs otherwise they might try to climb back up. The ones in...

Re: Upsize pics 2012

Nice up-size. Well, with that much foliage remaining from last year, I'd expect something like that. I was hoping my Nuda would upsize too. But I think I over protected mine and suffocated it instead. In short, complete top kill and possibly root kill also. Still waiting anxiously to see any shoot, ...

Re: The state of Connecticut eyeing bamboo for invasive stat

I just provided my comment also. A State with without bamboo is a sad State. If my state bans bamboo, I would get the heck out of there because clearly, the law makers are not very bright if they do make such dumb decisions based on the opinions of a few individuals who knows nothing but cry wolf. W...

Re: 3RD ANNUAL MOSO DIG/TRANSPLANT....BAMBOO FOR SALE!!!

I'm sure the owner would take your offer if you give him 10 bucks to dig up a chunk of those boos. He's want it gone, remember? Also, it seems not many people know the value of bamboo shoots. They are crunchy and can be made quite tasty with the right recipe. Even if you don't eat them, whacking sho...

Re: Ok, I'm claiming it's spring!

You kidding? At your location, it should've been Spring long long time ago. In fact, do you even have Winter over there?

Anyway, that planting looks good. Partial shade, tons of food, and plenty of room to grow. That better be some giant bamboo you're growing or you're wasting it's potential.

Re: has anyone had luck growing in Ontaio?

Yes, some bamboos have grown successfully in Ontario. And I'm willing to bet you want to grow the Big/Tall running bamboos. Aureosucata (a.k.a Yellow Groove bamboo) can reach 15-20 feet in Toronto. Bissetii is another good option. But, as I said, they're running bamboos, so don't plant them too clos...

Re: Signs of Spring 2012

Well...for sure the coldest month has passed. March looks promising... I will plant my dead/dying bissetii next week...if the ground is not frozen still. My bissetii has been potted indoor with no drainage with hardly any light. One culm was doing fine for the first few months, even showing new grow...

Re: Trip to Vietnam

I love vietnam...the food, the culture, and the natural environment that is sadly disappearing quickly. I once lived in a village (a refugee camp actually) that was green with all kinds of trees, vegetation, ponds (albeit created by B52 bombs). We had to get water from a well, and our house was made...

Re: The state of Connecticut eyeing bamboo for invasive stat

Someone in Connecticut with a chain saw please go help cut down her grove, and maybe mow down the shoots once a year. I was gonna suggest she collect the shoots in the Spring to eat and sell them. (Any asian would know the value of bamboo shoots). But then I read she used some sort chemicals to try ...
