Re: "Need Help - Gardener Topped My Bamboo!"

My alphonse karr is just now starting to shoot on two of the clumps. one on one and two on another. So looks like it is just coming into its growing season about now. As is the case of much gardening, if your plants seem already well watered and fed, perhaps a dose of patience might produce results....

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

Here's some sizing up pics Last year's culm of Parker giant. Planted 3-gal purchase summer 2009. One of two culms survived a 100-year freeze event that winter. I divided the plant in two in 2012. Looking forward to this year's shoots. http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/zz207/clumper/IMG_6289_zpsc94a...

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

Not even sure I'd know where to begin to speculate because you don't sound sure if they're even the same species. Even within the same species, even from what are likely the same divisions, clumps don't all sprout beginning at the same time and I don't know why that is. Could be the water content of...

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

All numbers approximate: 200 clumps or last year's divisions not yet sprouting. No sprouting yet on any of this year's divisions, about 40 planted this year, six look questionable and of those five lost all leafing. About 250 sprouts currently shooting into the garden. Monastery now at 65 inches. Ha...

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

Your shoot should certainly reach full height pretty quickly. We are in for a good 5 days of cold weather starting tomorrow so my shoots may completely stop growing especially if it is supposed to be in the 40-60F range... I hadn't before considered temperatures with regard to the speed of a culm's...

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

Got about 1/4 to 1/2 inch rain last yesterday/last night. Looks like no rain predicted for at least another week.

Here's Betung at 24 1/2 inches, having grown six inches in 26 hours.

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

http://i828.photobucket.com/albums/zz207/clumper/IMG_5968_zpsbfeb635d.jpg Betung @ about 18.5" so current rate of growth is about 4 inches per 24 hours. (I timed this one at 6 inches/day last year.)We're just tonight getting our first rain in about a week or more (a quarter inch in last hour a...

Re: Help me diagnose this leaf damage please.

Make sure you take before pics and then post them especially with some pics once they start growing. You'll enjoy the transformation. My neighbors where I've planted this new garden are stunned by the progress. And I think I've noticed a few of the squirrels are confused. I've only had oldhamii for ...

Re: Help me diagnose this leaf damage please.

Got it, so you had them shipped (if you get to FL, visit his place; it is gorgeous) but in the ground long enough that shipping shouldn't have made a difference. It looks like you are newly planting the entire area. Maybe you over-fertilized a bit? I suggest that because you don't know how much fert...

Re: Help me diagnose this leaf damage please.

You're in for a bit of some odd speculation here: but, you planted a baby bamboo at the intersection of two sidewalks? Do you have a lot of dog walkers in your neighborhood rounding that corner? My other concern would be that with the constraints of the sidewalk which is probably a few inches thick ...

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

I love the look of tropical shoots, nice work there and thanks for posting them! Seems we all like what we can't grow. It's part of the addictive quality of bamboo. I love the look of a grove of runners so I've set out to mimic that in one area, planting a cluster of clumpers somewhat at random and...

FYI...You have a little white powder on your Tropical blue culms.... :P
The Chungii in question has no idea to what you refer but denies the allegation nonetheless.

Re: Boo Shoots for 2014

Thanks for the pictures. Asian lemon shoot sure looks fancy. Good to see some nice semi tropicals on the forum. Represent! Does anyone still say that? I might be a little late to the fad. But, yeah, that's Asian lemonade. The new culms nicely sizing up. I love the yellow on that and sometimes use i...
