Re: Phy Propinqua ‘Beijing’ Flowering
These are first leaves that grow from the fresh shoot. Could be that oral setae appears on the branches a little bit later.

Re: Graceful Bamboo Flowering
You can try germinating the seeds and see if they are viable. It's very satisfying to see young bamboo grow from seed, but at the same time it can be frustrating, because it is a really slow process and some/most of them just struggle and never really take off. I miss growing bamboo seeds. I'm almos...

Re: Phy Propinqua ‘Beijing’ Flowering
Moso shoots are not hairy in their juvenile form. They look exactly like the one one your photo. There is a way to find out if it's Moso. When the culm sheathes fall off, you can check culm if it's glossy or velvety texture. You can use magnifying glass to check for the fuzz. Leaves on Moso in its j...

Re: Should I buy it?
I once did a mistake and shaved off Fargesia's above ground growth completely. What I got was 20cm tall tiny shoots in place of 2m tall bamboo. It never properly recovered, its divisions are now much more vigorous. By topping it completely, it loses a lot of vigor. With division it recovers after a ...

Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?
Yes. The flowering culms will remain flowering as far as I know. You should cut off every culm that is flowering to save its energy. Hopefully it starts growing non-flowering culms and recovers. What caused it to flower is another question..

That's how they 'sing'.
And that was in april, things escalated during the summer. Sparrows make so much noise that you can't even distinguish individual sound, it's just noise.

Re: Winter roost, fertilizer boon
Blackbirds, sparrows and lately common starlings. They occupy bamboo in large numbers, making mess and unbelievable noise around dawn and dusk. If you get close, you can hear them scream and the whole bamboo moves as they jump around and fight for a free spot in the canopy. It's interesting that in ...

Re: containing running bamboo
Even the metal sheath around the pool would pose no match to escaping rhizomes. It deforms easily and the part where it's joined together allows it to escape. It can also travel under if not at least around 1m deep.

Re: Chimonocalamus pallens
Salicylic acid is stress induced plant hormone that triggers natural resistance to environmental stress and should also work against pathogens. I think adding it into water would do the trick. It might absorb through leaves when applied on foliage. I'm sure the whole thing was researched already tho...

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
It's a mystery to me. When I tried to pull the bamboo canes to the ground, I died a little. A lot of resistance. When less than an inch of snow falls, whole darn thing is flat on the ground. Tarping some of bamboo does work. Shading and protecting it from wind exposure does a lot as well. ...

Yeah, they will seemingly recover, but when the weather warms up and dries the wet leaves, expect nice smell of dry bamboo leaves. Similar to hay but different.

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos
We are also having cold and sunny weather here in Slovenia. So far only Tongpeia arachnoides ( Borinda fungosa/gaolinensis ) is showing leaf damage and quite a lot of culm breakage. There was 5 cm or so of heavy wet snow and it flattened all the bamboos. Not enough to insulate anything, yet, enough ...
