Re: Large Grove Removal With Photos

Agreed that regular mowing is all that is needed to keep area in lawn grass. In my experience anyway, if rhizomes are not cut from main grove, they will never be exhausted. One of my groves is adjacent to grass along roadway where rhizomes are never cut and it sends up full sized culms every year, r...

Re: How to know if bamboo will die to ground from cold?

They look pretty beat up, but I doubt they will be killed to ground. If there were no green leaves at all, killed to ground would be more likely, though not assured. Spectablis should be able to take that temp, but the the wind at lower temps kills the leaves. You may find the tops of some of the ta...

Re: Large Grove Removal With Photos

Alan, they will probably continue to come up unless you cut rhizomes from main grove, otherwise the grove is still getting water & nutrients from mowed area, and will keep trying to put culms up. The easiest way to deal with it is to run a chain trencher along edge of grove every few years, or i...

Re: Large Grove Removal With Photos

I can't seem to access photos. In any case, you got to a good start by mowing the grove. You can bury the chopped up bamboo, or remove with or have the debris removed with skid steer with grapple attachment. Ongoing mowing will eventually successfully suppress the growth. I don't think you will need...

Re: Barrier depth and material

I don't have experience with that variety, but 60 or 80 mil HDPE barrier should do the trick. As for depth, that would be more species dependent, but in your location I'd think you might want to go toward deeper, such as 30 inches, something like this; https://lewisbamboo.com/products/bamboo-barrier...

Re: Winter Kill

I'd second waiting to see what was foliage killed vs killed to ground (KTG). This year my groves got whacked pretty badly, around Feb 3rd, probably the same time as everyone else in mid to east USA. Warmest winter on record around here, yet 18 hrs of sub-zero temps and gale force winds took its toll...

Re: Bamboo Experiment

I do most of my commercial plantings in some kind of berm, plus the massive one I have planted between me and the main road. The only tick is to make a trough in center of berm and put bamboo in it, so it can easily watered, and it looks like you have that covered.

Re: red margin bamboo

Are you referring to Phyllostachys Rubro...? I don't think P Rubromarginata is particularly suited for wet feet, but I have found it to be a hardy grower and good looking bamboo. It also has the distinction of being one of the last Pyllostachys to send up shoots in season, making it good for areas w...

Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?

They may be new seedlings, or could be new growth that came from newer rhizomes that will probably not be affected by flowering. I saw the same thing when Phyllostachys flexiosa flowered. All the old grove was dead or dying, but new growth came up around perimeter of grove that never flowered and is...

You mentioned it happened once, so I take it it was a one-off event? That aligns with what the ornithologist said, he said it was pretty random.

Winter roost, fertilizer boon

All this winter my various stands of bamboo, mostly Phyllostachys, became night roost for at least many hundreds of Robins. The would come in around twilight in groups of 50-100, fly around randomly for about a half hour, then settle in the bamboo. They took off every morning around dawn except in t...

Re: A moment of silence for all the dead and dying bamboos

I've seen that too, fully defoliated culms use most of the spring energy re leafing, so there is not much left for new shoots. I'm not sure if killed to ground gets going faster than defoliated over the long term however. It probably depends on the variety and age of culms involved.

Re: Bamboo variety advice please

Not sure what your area's temperature range is, and you'll likely not find bamboo w thick stems at that height. Unless your planting boxes are quite large, you would be best to use a clumping bamboo, as running bamboos will become root bound in a couple of years in confined space. One that comes to ...

I was so busy w work this spring I did not get to protecting the vivax shoots, and they got almost all of them. They mainly wrecked the vivax, and a couple of odd aureosulcatas, if they ate Bissetii shoots it would be a good thing, in my yard anyway. Going to have to be more vigilant next wear. I go...
