Possible Hibanobambusa?

This is some regrowth from a throw away section I got from a nursery. The mature grove was 6 to 8' tall and bushy. Leaves are 4 to 6" long and turn a drab yellow in the shade. It's not very upright, kind of viney but had big rhizomes.

atrovaginata splint

This was one of two new shoots that snapped or got knocked over so I put a splint on it to see if it would keep growing. It did! as you can see less than half is still connected. I doubt it will survive the winter. The splint is an old cylinder head cleaning brush.

Re: Above Ground Rhizome production

Sorry I am late to this post but it is an interesting experiment. I have had good success with running rhizome tips into partially buried pots with a 3" strip of barrier inside the pot to prevent it popping out one of the other drain holes. It shoots about 50% of the time with Aurea & Nigra...

Re: Advice on mite control

i have tried neem oil. it stuck to the leaves well but then when the sun came out the next day the leaves burned. it seemed like the plant suffered more from the neem oil than the mites.

Re: Advice on mite control

i think using a little of the bayer systemic (granular) stuff works well to keep the mites away or to keep them under control, but for a bad infestation it's really hard to get rid of them all. i suggest using something on the underside of the leaves a few times a few days apart to get the new hatch...

greywater

As many bamboos like slightly acidic soil, does anyone have experience using greywater irrigation? I have irrigated some p. nigra with prefiltered laundry water for a couple of years and it seemed to be fine, but greywater tends to be more alkaline than the native soil here.

Re: finally up!

no sign of black spots or stipes on the older culms. does bory start to color right away or does it take years? maybe it's Henon. that would be cool except that i deliberately put it in a spot near some mite infested black (assuming that reports i have read on dulcis being mite resistant); this woul...

Re: Anybody with cicada/bamboo experience?

when i was a kid there was one year when there was a crazy swarm of cicadas. we did all kinds of things with them. feed the to the dog was fun because you could hear them buzzing in the dog's mouth until...crunch! another dare we had was to stick you hand in a large jar full of live cicadas, or put ...

Re: finally up!

so almost a month later the shoot in the op is still the same size with no others arising. an adjacent plant that is upposed to be the same variety put up this shoot (see pic). this shoot only resembles nigra to my untrained eye. it is definitely not nigra though. the culms are green bleached to yel...

Re: late doesn't mean weak...

the black i have is sending up a lot of 3/4 inch shoots but it usually sends up a bunch of small ones before the big shoots come. i wonder if thinning these small ones will produce better for the large shoots & culms. and what, technically is a whip shoot? is it a rhizome tip that goes up? :?:
