Re: First Shoots of 2020

"Is it because they put much of their energy into re-leafing instead? "

Don't the Phyllostachys seem to alternate weaker and stronger shooting years? Or is that just what it seems like? Last year for mine was a pretty weak season -- this year it's crazy strong.

Re: P. Japonica 'Arrow Bamboo' seeds -trade for clumping bam

Those sure look like good seed! It's important to sow them while fresh... although I don't know exactly what that means. A couple of weeks? Longer?

Re: Dulcis Shoot - normal?

Curious how things went with the dulcis in the original post?

Re: Pinyanensis, Pingyanensis, Pingyangensis

I'm replying to David and Brad's most recent posts here about Ph. virella -- which I got from Brad. Both my rubro and virella are in similar situations -- both topkilled a couple years ago after a very dry fall and some cold snaps that winter. Both are reestablished now, and putting up decent-sized ...

I didn't realize you had so many types in your "new" yard "already"! (Especially the runners)

Those don't look like juvenile Ph. heteroclada shoots to me.

Re: Are the furthest shoots the most likely to abort?

Is it possible that you have 2 plants mixed together there? (Both the same variety) Could happen if your original division had more than one rhizome section in it. Might be an explanation. Could also be that you stopped a lot of them early. My bissetii seems like it's been shooting for 3 weeks or lo...

Re: Dulcis Shoot - normal?

If we say "that's not normal", what will you do about it? :)

My advice: try to be patient. That shoot will start growing soon. Or not. (Probably yes.) You'll get other shoots too.

If it helps my dulcis hasn't started visibly shooting yet, but I check it almost every day. :)

Re: Shortening Culms after division

If the leaves never unroll even when in shade and well-watered, then you probably do need to remove some. You can prune the culms, remove some branches, remove leaves, etc. You just want to make sure that remaining leaves are fully hydrated (not rolling). If they're completely drying out, that's a w...

Re: Clumping in the Columbia River Gorge

Problem with F. rufa is that it is not a tall plant -- maybe 7-8' tall. Not sure if that's what you want for a privacy screen.

Re: How cold is too cold for new shoots?

I wouldn't worry too much about 30ºF -- but I know from experience that thinner shoots (like Fargesia 'Rufa') get whacked by 26ºF. I don't know the exact temp that wiped them out. I suspect that thicker shoots like from Phyllostachys will handle those low temps better. It's also important how long t...

Re: Narihira bamboo - running or clumping??

Semiarundinaria fastuosa is running, but how much it spreads each year depends on your climate. Raised bed will not contain running bamboo. In ground barrier is best option for containment, but can be difficult to install, especially in a narrow area. Plus the bamboo will eventually become rootbound...

Re: Viewing bamboo from the Smithsonian collection

Nice! If you've never viewed botanical specimens before, it's pretty interesting. For me the best thing is seeing a specimen that was collected 50 or 100 or more years ago. Fascinating.

Re: Zone 4 bamboos over 22 years

No apologies needed -- this was very interesting and some parts were funny (intentionally or not). I like the "migration" description especially. :) I'm actually shocked that with such cold winters ANY of those still survive. It's also surprising that yearly topkill won't cause death after...
