Looking good m8. I’ve got mine planted in the ground now. Super excited to see what it turns into.

Sleeping buds / GA3
I’ve sourced a really rare Bamboo rhizome that has lots of buds on two sides of the rhizome but they are firm and darker. They don’t seem rotten but seem older. Has anyone used GA3 for wakening up Bamboo buds? This is and edulis species so it’s already a tricky Bamboo to propagate. Thanks I’m advanc...

Re: Phyllostachys nigra variegata
Here’s the new leaves. I’m seeing small shoots still. Probably and upsize of about 2x last year. Still really small though. There is a sulcas and two branches per node right now. Older tiny culms are blackening. The culms are rough to me. Maybe..... soft but more rough. At this point I’m still cluel...

Re: Phyllostachys nigra variegata
Good to hear yours is doing well.
Mine is shooting too inside the heated GH. The culms are a small small upsize from last year. Nothing really that’s showing me that’s its nigra yet. I’d like to be able to see nice shoots with the classic nigra look to them.
I’ll post some pics later.

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
When do Borinda shoot relative to other species? It might be the only genus of bamboo I have that is not currently shooting, I assumed they would shoot such as Fargesia does, generally ahead of the Phyllostachys. Ah, yes, my Dendrocalamus are not shooting either. I find my borinda shoot way late. T...

Nice photos.
I didn’t know you were in Victoria! I would of drove down and met up.
Lots of mite damaged Bamboo in the PNW. It’s really too bad.

Re: Bamboo shoots 2018
Shooting now are.... Fargesia scabrida and plain robusta, edulis gold stripe has just decided pop up but there reallly isn’t enough ground temp to get things going. A few others are going in the GH. Borinda albocerea Yunnan 3a, KR 5287, KR 7613. I’ll post some pictures when I’m back around the boo.

Re: How not to get rid of a bamboo stand?
Guess for me is that the bamboo will just pierce up through it. Waste of money and time. It almost would of been the same price to just get a small machine in there and dig it all up. Now he’ll have useless weed barrier in a few years.

Re: Does a collection become a obsession
All excellent responses and I’ll be considering lots of the suggestions myself. For me I’ve opted to go for collecting the super rare ones now. Rare for Canada I guess and the USA as well. Europe seems to be inundated with amaing Bamboo. Over the pond here it’s a battle to find anything unusual. Clu...

Re: Does a collection become a obsession
Lovely collection. Even if it’s an obsession I think it’s fine as long as it doesn’t interfere with family / health/ work. It’s far better being addicted to buying Bamboo then using drugs or drinking in excess. I know I find my garden and plant obsessions a place to get away from the fast pace of ev...

Fargesia scabrida shooting
The Fargesia scabrida has always been my earliest shooting Bamboo. Despite this cold recent event here on the Island it has been a warm late winter. Scabrida started shooting two weeks ago but very very slowing.

Re: Phyllostachys nigra variegata
I think it’s Nigra as well. Moso’s can’t take the abuse that this thing has been through to get here. But I wouldn’t complain either if it was an edulis. I’d actually be happier haha.
Here’s some more pics.
