Re: Latest Phyllostachys to shoot?
I have virella cca. 1,5 m next to atrovaginata. My observation is the same like your. Virella is less hardy. Especially the new stems have no enought time to reach maturity and are often frozen or snow break them.

Re: Latest Phyllostachys to shoot?
Jos VDP from whom I picked up the Virella thought that it was closely aligned with Atrovaginata and mine was not at all, very close to Rubro so I've always suspected a mixup on my part or someone else's. There were no other plants in that import trip of mine that seemed mixed up so I suspect if it ...

I have a little bit different experience. I have spectabilis mutation to aureocaulis form. But in vivax group I often see mutation from yellow to green, like you mention above.David wrote:Yes, That's what I have observed too. I have a Spectabilis grove that has yellow groove in it

Re: Upright Extremely Hardy clumpers
Which of the hardiest clumpers tend to have the most upright growth? Relatively thick, strong, and open culms would be a plus. Based on forum discussions, I am considering: -Jiuzhaigou 1 -Jiuzhaigou 2 -Jiuzhaigou 10 -Jiuzhaigou GenF -Taibashan II A lot of other good options are omitted because I wo...

Re: Starts from Seed
I think, it is not F. nitida or Jiuzhaigou seedling.
Compare it:

Re: Phyllostachys nigra variegata
New leaves on the new stems are very decorative. Old leaves turn to green. Plant is growing outside. Has survived -17°C, but carefully covered. NOt vigorous grower. It is weak TC plant. Has many very thin stems. http://bambusy.info/img/uploaded/Phyllostachys-nigra-aureovariegata-cerven-2018-01.jpg h...

Edinburgh zoo spells "aureosulcata" with an "a," too. Are you going to any of the meets, Deane? City of Edinburgh-20140712-00148.jpg It is print mistake or Zoo staff is not very informed in plant names. I don't know what is not clear in my post. I only noticed, that mistakes in ...

I don't know what is not clear in my post. I only noticed, that mistakes in names of bamboo on their page are more common than I could expect from bamboo specialists.
PHYLLOSTACHYS Hederaclayda ‘Striaght stem’ for example.

Re: SE Idaho, zone 5, what to grow?
Nuda has an undeserved reputation for hardiness. Mine is about 12 years old and top killed this winter, and has in the past too. I sometimes think that it can't be nuda, but then the shoots come up and confirm that it is nuda. Nuda 'Localis', on the other hand, is very hardy, and made it last winte...
