Re: Looking for a large 50+ gallon nursery pot
You can pick up 150g or 300g (or smaller) 2-ft tall tubs for watering cattle at farm-supply places, and avoid the shipping.

Re: Bamboo in route from PA to SC
There's a big grove of Moso (mixed with Robert Young) at the National Arboretum in DC, at the bottom of Asian Hill. There is a small amount of black bamboo and some other by the Penjing exhibit next to the main building. Those are my 2 favorite spots at the Arboretum, as well. Using 295, it's right ...

Wow, 4.5 years, congratulations! That is great you were able to nurse them back to health. Hope some of them turn out to be really special.

Re: Limp Boo...
I get some droopy culms sometimes when a brief spell of hot weather triggers shooting, and then a long period of cool weather comes in. We get that a lot in the Eastern U.S., and this year was especially so here. I have some droopy looking Moso culms this year that I think were caused by this.

Re: Bamboo in Virginia
Unless you have a special relationship with Bamboo Garden, I'd recommend having her pick up plants on her trip to Mid-Atlantic bamboo. Plants don't have to be shipped across country, and far bigger than you could get shipped.

I guess that's it. The only thing I know about it them is from what I've read here, as far as being fairly widespread in the NW. I apologize, I shouldn't have said 'disease'.

Re: Mid-Atlantic Clumper?
I tried Thamnocalamus tessellatus once and it did not survive the winter. I grow a couple of Fargesia in shade and part-shade; they survive OK but look very thin in the winter, and overall are not nearly as attractive as my runners, in my personal view. Zone 7a, VA outside of DC.

Re: Bamboo in Virginia
There's not much in the way of clumpers that will grow there...Fargesia might survive, but it's a little warm in the summer for them there. Try to persuade her to go visit Mid-Atlantic Bamboo, http://www.midatlanticbamboo.com/, not too far from her, SW of Richmond. Seeing all the bamboo they grow th...

Wow, Mark, that is a beautiful photo of a beautiful grove!
Does it look like that naturally, or do you trim off lower branches to highlight the culms?

Re: cheap Indoor lighting options
Yep, Laz is right, because light weakens with the square of the distance. So for example, comparing lights 1/2 foot away and 2 feet away, the light 2 feet away isn't 4 times weaker, but 16 times weaker. Thus, you need a stronger light source, not more lamps.

Re: cheap Indoor lighting options
Fluorescent lights are typically used when they can be placed several inches or half a foot or so away from plants--the light isn't all that strong, and they don't give off a lot of heat, so they can be placed closely. (Light weakens with distance.) So they're often used for seedlings. For a taller ...

But as I read all this I'm wearing a nice soft 'bamboo' t-shirt from the 29th ABS meeting! I don't wanna have it be rayon!!!

Re: FTC: Rayon Textiles are not Bamboo Products
Dang, they say there's no such thing as bamboo textiles on the market: it's all rayon. "Rayon is a man-made fiber created from the cellulose found in plants and trees and processed with harsh chemicals that release hazardous air pollution. Any plant or tree – including bamboo – could be used as...
