Re: Bamboo mites
Since spraying with talstar and avid a few years ago I have not had any Bamboo mite re-infections here. Where they came from is anyone's guess. Birds, nursery equipment, bugs, pets, whatever. I have had to add using Avid on my cane berries now in the early spring and late fall as there has been an i...

Re: Clumping Bamboo Footprint?
Most 'clumpers' will continue to expand. So you have to chop them back every few years. That is what I do here anyway. I pot them up and/or re-plant them in other places on my property.

Indocalamus latifolius flowering here
Went out to get the mail today and on my way back I noticed a culm of my Indo. latifolius had seeds on it. Then I found 5 other culms with seeds on them as well, I collected a bunch of them in a baggie. They are rather small seeds. Not sure if they are viable or not, as all other bamboo seeds I have...

Re: Bory flowering
Odd. No flowering Bory here. Or black for that matter. Lots of people reporting locally that their Phy. nigra is flowering. My Henon bloomed 3 yeas ago now, and all the shoots that have come up since have also flowered. The rhizome lives on! The goat next door does not mind. Thus far all the seeds f...

Re: Phyllostachys nigra 'Bory' flowering in Issaquah, WA
Henon is blooming for me here in north Oregon, but not any other nigras, including Bory, Megurochiku or black. Black is very popular here and everyone wants it. I am long since sold out of it.

Re: Milorganite now?
Phyllostachys bamboos have two growing/shooting seasons. One is in the late spring when they shoot culms. The other is now in the fall when they are running rhizomes. I feed my bamboos once a month from March though September here.

Re: Seeds available
None of my nigra Henon seeds seem to be viable. They are all empty when compressed with my fingers on the plants. On over twenty 20 foot culms? All empty seeds. No pollinator here? Self sterile? Too cold? Dunno... I cut the blooming culms and scattered them around an empty are in case some are viabl...

Re: Black (Phy. Nigra) Bamboo blooming, what to do?
Henon here is definately blooming a lot. In pots and in a grove. None of the other nigra species here are blooming though. Including standard black, Megurochiku, Daikokuchiku, Punctata, and Bory.

Re: Bamboo mites
I have found that Talstar and Avid (with an ag soap/spreader activator) are the best offensive measure to eradicate bamboo mites. I spray them in rotation to vary their diet so they do not build up immunity. I had a small infestation here last year with them on my Fargesia nitidas. Talstar is a cont...

Re: Clumping in the Columbia River Gorge
In Hood River you are up against cold temps in winter with the strong east wind. For that reason Chusquea culeou will not do well there. I had one here for some years but then a 15 degree winter chill came and did it in. My brother has one in the ground in Hillsboro that is hanging on, but you reall...

Re: Narihira bamboo - running or clumping??
Semiarundinaria fastuosa (AKA Temple and Narihira) is a runner, and it can run deep and far. I have been growing it here for about a decade in the ground. It runs about 6 feet a year in all directions. I have acreage, so I do not have any barriers here. I dig up the runners, pot them up and sell the...

Re: Help with Bamboo ID at new house
Well, in Toronto/Buffalo it will be a really really hardy bamboo. That narrows down the filed a lot. So most likely a Phyllostachys, and from those, most likely aureosulcata, nuda, bisettii, or maybe atrovaginata. It could be several others, but the list is short.

Re: Watering
In my experience, bamboos are pigs when it comes to food and water. They are not fussy. They are not very deep rooted so IMO deep watering insane amounts is just a waste. They will do better with light watering more often. In the ground they can gather far more water from less moist soil. In pots th...

Re: growing Moso in the USA
Moso is a fussy species. I have grown it inland and on the coast in Oregon and California. It likes the coast with warmer winters and cooler summers. Inland it bakes and gets ratty, or freezes and gets ratty. It also does not like to be in pots. It wants room to grow lots of rhizome. I have one spin...
