Re: nigra 'Hale'
It's one from Bamboogarden , it does go red on the culms in the Fall here . I took one to Jos in Holland and he thinks he had the same plant years ago , but lost it . I'll make up some gallon pots of a few things . I think that S3 should be fine I have about 3 to go out and you will be one of the th...

Re: Need help with my Fargesia seedling please
When I grew some Fargesia 'Ganzu' 2 seedlings we found that some will only do well in full shade, some in half shade and some in full Sun. To be safe I'd grow them in a lot of to start with, and when you move them to more Sun keep a sharp eye out for problems. Move back into shade if you see a probl...

Re: Growing larger culms
Feed and water, lots of layers of compost. With rich soil you will have enough insect activity to keep air around the roots. I do an annual Bark Mulch layer which then gets covered in the fall with more compost. So over time there are layers of different organic material . I use a lot of grass clipp...

Re: nigra 'Hale'
Sound good , do you want S3, parvi and or prominens , I have couple of others like semiarundinaria 'Redfall' , and old gen Kwengsiensis that has stopped flowering. And some small vivax H inversa. Plus another Bamboo I could email the name of.

Re: Just a comment on Parvifolia
Brad , does your parvifolia stay as green as your other Bamboos ? I always have a problem keeping mine as green as S3 say. If I did not use Ironite on parvifolia it would be very pale. Perhaps it's just my soil conditions. I have 22 shoots on parvifolia this year, compared to S3 with 30 . Largest sh...

nigra 'Hale'
I'm growing a nigra 'Hale' in France , it's slow , but it's the real thing from Kimmei Bamboo in Holland http://www.kimmei.com/e.html . It goes black in a few months rather than a few years. I was wondering if anyone has a nigra 'Hale' here that they would like to trade a division ? I'm also looking...

Re: Just a comment on Parvifolia
I have not tried Milorganite, I'll see if they have some locally. I do throw a lot of grass clippings and bark mulch and other compost in the boxes . I'm also going to start with Miracle grow watering once a week. I got lazy last year and skipped the Miracle grow, I need to get back to over the top ...

Just a comment on Parvifolia
I was looking at my parvifolia today and it's got to that stage of shooting where the old culms are about to grow new blades. There are a lot of old blades turning brown and the plant over all seems to need feeding. That's the comment , I have to remind myself that parvifolia is the Bamboo that take...

Re: Now where did those come from
As I said before anyone who is passing can take division. If your in Maryland , Virginia , Delaware or DC it's not so far , we are near the Beltway, Rockville , North Bethesda area. The big stuff should be ready in a couple of weeks with this hot weather. The bigger the car the bigger the single cul...

Re: Now where did those come from
I've been looking at the new culms to see where they start to branch out. S3 is starting at about 6 ft up, prominens is at about 4 feet up and parvifolia is branching from 12 to 18 inches up . These culms are all about the same size , an 1 to 1 1/2 ,so the difference in branch points is pretty amazi...

Re: Now where did those come from
here is S3 heading up 30 ft or so ,with the odd 3 inch culm.
Plus the small S3's to come out and the Prominens by the pot , the inch plus culms that need a new home.

Re: Now where did those come from
Parvifolia yes There are about 6 small culms of S3 to dig up plus the odd larger culm . I think Steve Lau is going to come down and dig some divisions. I'm not mailing stuff out any more but anyone pasting or is welcome to take a division. Or ask Steve if he can put one away for you. there are also ...
