Re: Latest Phyllostachys to shoot?

Jos VDP from whom I picked up the Virella thought that it was closely aligned with Atrovaginata and mine was not at all, very close to Rubro so I've always suspected a mixup on my part or someone else's. There were no other plants in that import trip of mine that seemed mixed up so I suspect if it h...

Re: Latest Phyllostachys to shoot?

Mine was always Rubro which seems related to Virella and I really wonder if the Virella that I imported is actually a form of Rubro? Shoots look quite similar and perhaps shoot timing is as well?

Re: Whitening of Canes during spring

It sounds like your rootball was a decent size and if it was dug from the outer edge of the patch then it seems likely that you got some viable buds on the rhizomes, I personally would leave the white culms until either nothing comes up and you give up or until new growth is up and has made it's own...

Re: Whitening of Canes during spring

I'd venture that the whiteish canes are dead but the clump might not be, did these experience temps below say 10F? It is quite possible that you'll see new shoots maybe 25% the size of what you planted come up but I do think the white ones are goners.

Re: Help identifying

New culms of Phy nuda would be smoky dark at sheath fall and I'm not seeing that here, I'm feeling quite rusty on ID'ing Phyllostachys species these days, I have been working on a page that is not really ready but I went ahead just now and added to my website at http://needmorebamboo.com on ID'ing b...

Re: source for Shanghai 3

Island life is pretty good, I've not been cold in quite some time now and that was my goal! ALthough I see snow from my lanai and can get cold about anytime I choose with a 45 minute drive. Clearing land, not being able to dig a hole anywhere and starting over are all challenges as I"m well int...

Re: Shoot thread

The plant sold as Phyllostachys nigra, which is surely Gigantachloa atroviolacea has sized up quite nicely since Sep when planted and moved once since then. The original division was about 4' tall and maybe ring finger diameter.

Re: bamboo damage from Feb 2021 polar vortex

I'm currently growing 4 varieties of bananas but I think one of them is on the way out, I grew fruiting edible bananas in northern CA which was a bit tricky, and inedible fruiting bananas in IN which was much harder. Also planted a small citrus orchard here (7 varieties) with some exotics like lyche...

Re: bamboo damage from Feb 2021 polar vortex

I don't know about either of your site conditions but I always kept my groves cleaned up and thinner as I liked that look and I am certain that it adversely impact hardiness as the grove density was too thin to protect from winds. So if Alan's groves are older and thicker I would expect them to hold...
