Re: Sasaella masamuneana 'Aureostriata' flowering.
Curious how many of these plantings have survived flowering. Ours seems to have stopped flowering, at least for now, and is putting up a few new shoots.

Re: How large will Fargesia robusta grow in the Deep South (
Other growers in the South report that 'Rufa' seems to have maxed out in the 4'-6' range for them. Ours are all still small, but seem to be happy. The only large clumps I've seen in the South were at Furman University in Greenville, SC. They were around 5'-6' tall. Bamboo Garden's website states tha...

Re: How large will Fargesia robusta grow in the Deep South (
Thanks John.....I'm working on the assumption that robusta will not grow as tall here as it does in the Pacific Northwest and other cooler climates. F. dracocephala 'Rufa' (the only other Fargesia we've had any luck growing) does not grow as large here as it does elsewhere. Our growing season is ver...

How large will Fargesia robusta grow in the Deep South (US)?
Curious to see whether anyone knows how large robusta will grow down South.
My oldest plants are around 5ft. tall after 2-3 years from 1-gallon starts. Grown in heavy shade with regular irrigation.
We are in deep SW GA, about an hour north of Tallahassee, FL.

Re: Anyone else growing Fargesias in full sun in the SE US?
Agree they will probably need irrigation indefinitely in the full sun, which is not a problem since they are on the edges of an irrigated zone controlled by a timer. Not saying that planting in the full sun here is advisable, just that it may be possible to grow them in the full sun in the Southeast...

Anyone else growing Fargesias in full sun in the SE US?
After seeing some nice Fargesia dracocephala 'Rufa' clumps in a sunny area at Furman University (Greenville, SC) last fall, I decided to try 'Rufa' and Fargesia robusta in the sun here (SW Georgia). They were planted next to one of our irrigation pads to ensure they didn't dry out. Halfway through t...

Re: looking to harvest some Phyllostachys_bambusoides
I can't do it today, but if you're ever back down this way, give me a head's up and we can visit a large madake grove nearby to cut poles. Jaap has harvested from there before.

Re: Bambusa textilis
Run your hand up and down a few canes of each plant. If one of the plants is Gracilis, you will feel rounded bumps all along the surface of the canes. They are not visible to the eye, but definitely perceptible to the touch.....more on some canes than on others, so check several canes. I haven't fel...
