Re: Cold Tolerance 9A Advice Needed
I've grown that species for over 20 years, in zones 8B and 9A. I can't say that I've seen any difference in cold hardiness between cultivars. I have two plants labeled as Goldstripe, and they look just about like Green Hedge to me. I haven't noticed any gold stripes. But hardiness is the same as all...

Re: Cold Tolerance 9A Advice Needed
Hmm, wonder if Hirose is less hardy? My Oldhamii was fine to 26f it never got colder than that. I think Hirose might be a little more tender, but both need a decent stretch of mild winters to perform well here, and these recent cold snaps devastated both. Before 2021, there were many beautiful plan...

Re: Cold Tolerance 9A Advice Needed
Its been a few years since I have posted on here :blob: . Last year temps dropped down ~14-16'F for hours (8 hour stretches), as bad cold front ran through Texas. I had a lot of mature clumps of Kanapaha(200FT Row), and half of them actually died :blackeye: and never pushed back new canes. My Bambu...

The "Other bamboo related Photos" entry section seems to be there, but the "Bamboo Photos" section isn't working.

Re: Please help-Bamboo is in bad shape
Everything Brad said is 100% correct.
At this point, it is too soon to assess the exact extent of the damage. I am south of Houston, and probably stayed a few degrees warmer than you, but most Bambusa textilis forms are showing signs of life in some branch buds. The more, the better!

Re: Bambusa malingensis and coming freeze
That's a good question. In my immediate area, it did not get cold enough to freeze even a crust on the surface of the soil...I did check. But the northern parts of metro Houston may have. I'm sure Austin was cold enough.

Re: Bambusa malingensis and coming freeze
Brad,
That storm was a very brief spell in an otherwise extremely mild winter, so I don't think it will have a large impact on the runners. But if there is a noticeable effect, I'll be sure to report it!

Re: Bambusa malingensis and coming freeze
How did your malingensis fare? I live down the coast in Seadrift and all my clumpers are hard hit including my malingensis. Even the multiplex varietys are hurt bad. Going to have to wait and see what will recover. MarCat This was definitely one for the record books ! All my clumping bamboos...

Re: No quit in this guy
I once cut a Bambusa tuldoides plant out of the ground, with the intent of getting rid of it. I threw the rhizome chunks on open ground, so they would desiccate. But I happened to get a rainy period right after that, and the pieces produced shoots, then formed rhizomes that started digging into the ...

Very nice growth! Was the cutting placed directly in the ground, or did you root it in a pot first?

Re: Bamboo + Flooding/Salt Water
Running bamboos, in general, are much less tolerant of flooding than tropical bamboos. I have had many plants die or be quite weakened by periodic inundation, or just saturation in heavy soils. I would generally say that running bamboos can handle any amount of water, if they are on soils with good ...

Re: Bamboo + Flooding/Salt Water
I seem to have bad luck with tropical bamboo here along the coastline, and nearly a week out now from the tropical storm, it would appear I don't fare much better with responses on this forum. So it goes. For anyone arriving here in the future via google search, my experience has been that the Bamb...

I have to say I applaud this kind of commitment and technical ability!mshaffer wrote:It's sort of extreme I guess, but it's nice to have a way to protect the larger culms when we get a blizzard, etc.
