Re: Ph.Bambusoides?
Also looks like P. vivax, their inmature shoots look similar as do their leaves. The imature plants of both Vivax and Bambusoides put out more leaves per branch than the mature culms. Vivax also shoots earlier than bambusoides. Bambusoides has hairy oral setae on culm sheaths but I am not sure if th...

Pseudosasa japonica has taken off. I went out this morning and had several shoots a foot and a half out of the ground. They were not there a couple days ago when I checked.

RE: Unknown Black
That looks like Arundinaria gigantea "Tecta" to me. There is a lot of it around the Carolin as and it gets mighty scruffy looking in the winter. It maxes out around 10 feet and has persistent culm sheaths, and loves to grow around creeks and rivers. The Arundinaria gigantea around here get...

Shooting this week Fargesia robusta Indocalamus solidus Psuedosasa japonica 'Tsutsumiana' Phyllostachys bambusoides 'All Gold' Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Castillonis' All of these except the Fargesia sustained almost complete leaf kill this winter, due to the fact they were planted a week before the...

All the Ph. nigra rhizomes I dug last year and threw in pots are shooting. Nothing else has emerged yet.

Thanks for the input everyone. I just came back from the SE chapter meeting at the Savannah bamboo gardens and took a picture of the P. bambusoides "slender crookstem" there. It looks like a pretty good match. Hopefully I will be able to get a definitive ID when those shoots come up. http:...

RE: another green phyllostachys
rfgpitt thanks for the reply. I had not thought of that bamboo. The reason why I ruled out aureosulcata was first the coloration, but i had not thought of Pekinensis, and then exactly for the reason you mentioned, the culms of this bamboo are extremely smooth to the touch. I've have some aureosulcat...

another green phyllostachys
I am trying to narrow down the possibilities on this one. I will post pics of shoots in a few months when they come up, which should help, but I would like to see if anyone may be growing something that looks like this or has seen something like this. What I do know is it is not p. aureosulcata. And...

freak of nature?
Last March I was given the opportunity to clean up a small grove of Phyllostachys viridis "Robert Young" at a local bird sanctuary. For the time I donated, plus a $50 donation to the sanctuary I was allowed to take all of the pruned culms and rhizomes I could carry out. I planted the rhizo...

RE: buying liners of bambusoides, moso or other phyllostachy
Lance, thanks for clarifying that for me. I guess then I need to know who I can get seed from or if possible rhizome divisions in large quantities. Seed would be ideal due to $$, but my luck with bamboo seed is poor at best. I bought Moso seeds a couple of years back and didn't get any to ger...

buying liners of bambusoides, moso or other phyllostachys
I am doing some initial research on viability of bamboo plantations and their adaptability to the southeast US, zone 8 and also zone 7. What I am looking for are sources for liners, particularly the larger Phyllostachys. I am thinking bambusoides, edulis, nigra "Henon", possibly makinoi. A...

RE: need some advise on whether to thin my yellow groove or
I do not know if this will help, but here is a link to a PDF article in Aspects of Agronomy, Vol.74 Aspects_of_Bamboo_Agronomy.pdf . It addresses the issues of thinning bamboo, the cycle of leaf loss and its affect on photosynthesis and shoot production among other things. What I took away from it i...

Thanks for the picture Nate. I am heavily leaning to your and Chris's assessment that it looks like masamuneana albiostrata.

RE: help with dwarf varigated bamboo
What up Chris? No problem with the pots. There was no way they would have fit in the truck on the trip home with all the bamboo we had anyway. In the spring were bringing a trailer. I was thinking it might be Sasella masamuneana albostriata as well. I saw that Sasella masamuneana albostriata has the...
