Dividing a bamboo clump
I decided yesterday to move a B. Malingensis from the ground and divide this clump to make 5 separate plants. The plant is approaching its 3rd growing season. I removed plant, sprayed off all the old soil so I could see where the rhizomes were attached and cutting to make sure I would not damage the...

Re: Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
I think I know what video you’re mentioning. I’ve seen the video bamboo sorcery put out but I’ll check it out again. Rhizome divisions with culms are best to do before plants start to shoot? I’m kind of hesitant on doing oldhamii culm cuttings right now if they take a year to plant out as I return t...

Re: Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
Is now a good time to take divisions from oldhamii? I do have a double row of oldhamii I could take from. It is the start of summer months here with temps anywhere from high 70s up into the low 90s with cooler temperatures at night. They do sell B.Oldhamii here but they are smaller plants from micro...

Re: Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
Has anyone had success propagating B.Oldhamii from culm cuttings? Beginning of summer best time to do this before new shoots start to come up? The Bamboo nursery where I purchased my plants seemed reluctant in showing me any methods after the fact. Told me divisions are the fastest way to propagate ...

Re: Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
That looks great, I’m going to try my hand at air rooting B.Oldhamii this year as I don’t want to cut any culms as of yet. I could use another 40 plants as a large windbreak privacy screen. I’ll see how that goes. I’ve seen a few videos on you tube using peat moss and rooting hormone with plastic wr...

Re: Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
I don’t know if it would be beneficial or not but dipping plants in a rooting hormone? Would that help? I have plants in pots a coconut core and perlite mix. Would it be better to have plants in shade or sun? Some plants are from rhizomes and others are from culm cuttings. The B.Gideon’s blue is fro...

Saving newly planted waterlogged bamboo
I’ve recently planted 73 bare root clumping bamboo plants out in the field here in Uruguay. 7-9 days ago to be exact. A couple days after planting we received a good amount of rain and with the clay soil they have here some plants seem to be water logged/starting to die. Dropping leaves and culms tu...

Re: Transplanting clumping rhizomes
Sorry for the late reply, I agree with the Florida source just watching what the plants have done their first year. I’m still learning from mistakes I’ve made, potting bamboo in heavy soils, too close of spacing. A year and a half ago I planted 2 lines of b. oldhamii on 3 meter centers staggered but...

Re: Transplanting clumping rhizomes
didn't see D minor 'Amoenis' or Nastus elatus on your list, nor any Schizostachyum, I brought a D minor ‘Amoenis’ last year but didn’t survive the trip and long wait for transplanting. Slip through the cracks this year as I do like how the culms look. Would like a Nashua elatus or a schizostachyum s...

Re: Transplanting clumping rhizomes
Both functional and ornamental. Seeing what grows best in the Uruguay climate and also 1 or 2 species where I might be pushing the zone, but can pull it off if bamboo is planted in a protected area (B. Lako and B.Vulgaris Wamin). I want to say the lowest it will get here is 27-28 C, I have B.Tuldoid...

Transplanting clumping rhizomes
Good Morning, Here in Uruguay we are in the late spring month and approaching summer. I’ve found information on clumping bamboo is a little harder to find the running species. I would like to dig up some B.Tuldoides rhizomes and plant on a fence line to use as a wind barrier. Would These rhizome div...

Re: Bare root bamboo planting
When I bring any of my plants (not bamboo) out of shade into sun, I do it slowly with gradually more sun exposure only if the plant has lots of leaves that it will keep. If it has none or few leaves, straight into full sun -- you want those new leaves to be accustomed to full sun from the first min...

Re: Bare root bamboo planting
I'm also struggling with the spacing issue, from experience I'm planting based on other areas I've grown bamboo but I'm inclined toward putting these sub tropicals too close together and I need to push them farther apart - these guys get huge and every time I see a clump somewhere else I am taken b...

Re: Bare root bamboo planting
Ok, thank you for the help and advice. Also what does one do for spacing for the bigger bamboos in a bamboo garden? Looks like B.Beecheyana and Odashimae will be pretty large, others as well. I have a line of D.Asper planted out 2 weeks ago at 8m spacing.
