Phyllostachys humilis #1? #2?
Trying to identify 2 bamboos, northern NJ 6b/7a border both have thick leaves like Ph. bissetii They are across a busy highway from each other. #1seems like P. humilis but with yellow sulcus When I rub upward on the culm it does NOT feel rough like P. aureosulcata, but mostly smooth. Not shooting ri...

Re: Bamboo Forest in Prattville, Alabama - PIC HEAVY
I see 2 of the pics have bamboo growing in water. What species would that be? Is Nigra that tolerant of water?

Re: Unidentified Bamboo
I'm leaning against Ph. Aureosulcata (Alata=all green). This is an all green form. Doesn't have the sandpaper feel when rubbed upwards. But the violet color is there. Maybe Phyllostachys angusta but there really aren't many dark spots. It is a tough culm when cut mature and dried. http://www.bamboog...

Unidentified Bamboo
I thought this was Golden or something like that because the mature dry canes are very strong and have a wax to them. This is the first time I've been able to collect shoots.

Re: Where can I find a cheap/ light weight potting mix?
Several years ago I bought the 40lb bags of topsoil (the cheapest) and mixed in a bag of perlite ($3-4) and vermiculite. I used it for houseplants and the soil is still soft and airy. Perlite doesn't decompose like the fine bark mulch so its there forever. I have stopped using vermiculite as there w...

Re: Mass propagation of bamboo with little to work with.
stevelau1911, I also used craiglist to try and get some 1 gal. plants - one person I was in contact with told me he only sold large plants. He purchased small plants from bamboogarden, let them grow up and then sold 15+ gallon plants. This guy was in New York (Long Island), so with shipping and some...

Re: bamboos in the house
Alan: I fertilized often, watered down Miracle Grow every 2 weeks or so. I also suspect overwatering (suspect #1) but the Moso was shooting like crazy over the winter (all culled by me - winter growth is too weak) and just died come spring. There is still one culm alive (a quarter of a pencil width)...

Re: bamboos in the house
I've had problems with indoor bamboos twice and I live in an apartment. Maybe because they never went through winter dormancy and experienced cold OR it could have been over-watering? The first was Golden Bamboo and it lived for almost 3 years and then died - maybe over-watering. Next was Moso put i...

That's TaY TaY nursery, their website was hilarious a few years back. Out and out fr@uds though, they went on an offensive against any bad comments - some websites had to remove the neg@tive comments.

Re: Ebay Bissetii
My ebay story: I bought some EBAY bamboo last winter. "8 - 1 gallon plants for about $80" with shipping I received a mature culms CUT to 5 inches in height and the soil ENTIRELY WASHED AWAY. I wrote the seller back and he said of course there is no soil that way its cheaper to ship. Only 1...

Hello all:
Collected some seeds yesterday.
In various states of maturity, with and without chaff.
-Spiros
Roy: I cannot hose away some soil as the plant is in a rural area.
