Re: Question about Texas winter damage to gracilis bamboo

I have some clumps that are 4-6 feet wide at the base. Will cutting it down to the ground say with a chainsaw allow for more space for new culms to shoot in the middle of the clump versus the perimeter where they tend to grow?

Question about Texas winter damage to gracilis bamboo

All - I have significant gracilis bamboo hedge that wraps the entire backside perimeter of my yard. The clumps are roughly 5 years old. During the winter storm in Central texas, they suffered severe cold damage. They were even covered in ice for several days until it warmed up. In the past, we had a...

Re: When to stop fertilizing?

Lost nearly every single leaf due to the freeze! They bounced back stronger than ever though starting to sprout again in February of this year. I was concerned with additional fertilizer triggering new shoots which wouldn't harden off in time before another potential freeze. Some of my late shooters...

When to stop fertilizing?

I'm based in Austin, TX and we are approaching the end of August and I'm wondering if I should give a final round of fertilizer to finish off the year. Last year, my gracilis continued to leaf out into early November before going dormant until early February. We generally have warm weather through e...

Fertigation Systems

Hi All - I currently use a drip system and wanted to here thoughts on using an in-line fertigation system (fertilizer that distributes in the drip system). Does anyone use one of these? Thoughts? Since it has variable distribution rates, I'm wondering if it makes sense to slowly and continuously fer...

Re: Freeze Damage

Most of the twigs appear to still be green. The temps dropped down to 24, 19, and 18 three days consecutively. Another weird thing is that 3 of the clumps are starting to shoot which seems very early.. I didn't apply any fertilizer or anything. The only thing I can think of is that we received a ton...

Freeze Damage

It's been a sad month for my Gracilis bamboo due a very abnormal cold spell in Austin last month. ~90% of all the leaves have turned brown and dry  Any idea how long it will take them to bounce back and provide the much wanted screen? I'm also assuming the upsizing this year is probably gone as...

Re: Clumping Bamboo Control

I have a ton of extra patio stones so I'll probably re-use some of them by stacking them 2 or 3 at a time to prevent growth on top. Also I'm thinking I'll put the flashing down on top of the current bed of mulch as well prior to the stones. In the other section, I'm going to look into those building...

Clumping Bamboo Control

Hi All - I've planted Gracilis bamboo along a fence and want to make sure I will always have at least a foot of clear space between fence and bamboo so that I maintain some access behind. Could I put a row of 12"x12" patio stones on the back side to help prevent the bamboo from spreading b...

Gracilis Growing Season

When is the shooting season for Gracilis bamboo? Mine are still sending up new shoots which I planted in May & June this year which is exciting. Will it send up shoots and suddenly end the growing season at only half way up? If so, do those shoots pick back up again next year or top off in that ...

Exceptionally Large Alphonse Karr Bamboo

While touring the Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver, I spotted this Bambusa Multiplex 'Alphonse Karr' which I was very surprised at the culm size! See below and note that I am 6'2" with large hands... Has anyone see one this size before? I didn't realize it grew that large. http://uploads.tapat...

Fertilizing over or under mulch

I recently needed to pull my mulch back to fix drip irrigation lines and noticed that roots have started to grow into the mulch. Looking forward to the next time I plan to fertilize assuming I'm going to use composted manure, do I apply it on top of the mulch or pull it back and put it underneath? W...

Bamboo screen examples

Hi All -

I'm looking to create a bamboo screen using gracilis textilis and looking for photos for examples/inspiration. Anyone out there want to show off their screens? Growth rate photos? Any species would be appreciated!

Re: Planter seems overly tall

Rhizomes will destroy that pond liner in short order. I assume the liner is not on the bottom but regardless they do a number on it wherever it is. I also should have mentioned that the ultimate goal of the liner is to help prolong the life of the wood as much as possible. If the container's life i...
