Re: A winter look at my bamboos
Almost every winter here we have few nights at -20C, that's -4F for you Farenheit people :). And a lot of people grow bamboo. Aureosulcata gets about 12m tall and 6cm in diameter(maximum size in literature is 15m and 6.5cm).That kind of cold doesn't do much damage if there's no wind. Only Ph. nigra ...

Try fargesia robusta campbell. It grows about 4.5-5m in zone 7b/8a, it should be at least 3.5m tall in zone 6. Cool thing about this fargesia is that it has second shooting period during summer. Canes are smaller than those in spring, but still.... And that clay, it would be wise to do a little mixi...

Re: Freeze Damage
Hi. I'm from Serbia, Europe. We had worst winter in the last 20 years. We had over 50 consecutive freezing days(didn't get over freezing whole day)rarely temperature climbed above -7C (20F). We are zone 6b/7a, but this winter was like 4b/5a at best. Anyways, we had couple of freezes -25 Celsius (-13...

Re: Bamboo in marshy conditions?
you might try Dawn redwood. Very nice tree, grows very fast 5-8 feet per year, and loves wet feet. Also you may cut it at any time, it doesn't care, you can make a wall and prune it every 3 months...

Re: Bambusa oldhamii in colder areas?
So it should be possible? I mean, can the root system survive with some heavy mulching? I was thinking to try it. It would be sourounder by tall wall of yellow groove bamboo, so it won't get any wind during winter.

Re: Can anyone identify this?
I didn't took this picture, it's from Japan. It looks spot on like henon, but shoots are brighter, and redish, and because the fact shoots are visible, and pic has big resolution, some might determine real species.

Bambusa oldhamii in colder areas?
Hi. Did someone attempted to grow Oldhamii in zone 7? Can it be done? It probably won't reach it's maximum, but can it be done? All your experiences is very welcome. For example, I've seen bamboo grown in zone 4 and 5. It dies to the ground every year, but it comes back in late spring-summer time...
