Re: bamboo damage from Feb 2021 polar vortex

Sounds nice. I'll have to look some of those up to see what they are. I got some edible Bananas to flower by keeping them under T5 HO lamps during the winter. Most of them I kept dormant thru the winter

Re: bamboo damage from Feb 2021 polar vortex

I grew Bananas here in Missouri. There was a pretty active forum a few years back on Bananas.com. Looks like its still around. I really enjoyed them. Many interesting varieties to mess around with. Really looking forward to Tropical gardening with all the exotic plants like Orchids etc

Re: bamboo damage from Feb 2021 polar vortex

My groves are around 5 years old. Shanghai 3 has by far been the best performing Bamboo here. The grove is 75ft by 100ft or so. Its doing so well I am letting it have all the room it wants. Parvifolia is doing well but doesnt put up anywhere near the amount of shoots that S3 does so those groves are...

Re: bamboo damage from Feb 2021 polar vortex

We got hit hard here in southwest Mo. Everything above ground is dead, even the Aureosulcatas which I thought were pretty tough. Quite a few are completely dead. The ones that aren't dead have reverted back to what they were when I first planted with some only pushing up the grassy type growth. Seve...

Re: source for Shanghai 3

I have it in Missouri but you'd have to come get it or wait until fall when I head south again

Re: Hardiness question (and website question)

I am in southwest Missouri on a farm with open land all around. Open Prairies so the wind always blows. Anything that can make it here is pretty hardy. Arundinaria does really well here. P Stimulosa is a very strong grower and has never died back or top killed in the 7 years I've had it. Shanghai 3 ...

Re: Getting back into gardening, zone 5

Rufledt, I have some Bamboos that survived several nights of -12 here in Missouri so maybe they could work for you. Phyllostachys Stimulosa has come thru with very little top kill. Indocalamus Tesselatus and Longiaritus have performed really well here and spread very quickly as far as shrub types go...

Re: Getting back into gardening, zone 5

Brad, that's interesting about the Parvi. Thought mine was yellowing from the extreme heat and drought this year. I'll try some fertilizer.

Phyllostachys Robustiramea

Does anyone know anything about this one? It seems to be a vigorous grower. Only thing I could find on the web was that it is a prolific shooter and I would agree with that. It just put up two more and we are well into summer.

Re: 'Megurochiku'

I have several plantings of Megurochiku. One flowered last year but this year its put up several culms and seems to be okay so I'm guessing it was stressed last summer. My Propinqua Beijing also flowered last year and it has put up 7 new culms and no sign of flowers yet.

I'll try to get some photos this week end. I got mixed up when I said mine was throwing green with yellow culms. It was my Harbin Inversa that is doing that.

Re: The Beauty Phyllostachys huangwenzhu Inversa

Its one of my favorites as well. Mine turns red quickly with the strong sun light here so I don't get to enjoy the fine stripes for long. Mine does put out a few green culms with yellow sulcus so its a nice mix.

Re: Bamboo for zone 6A

You're right about the wind Springtime. I was going to say the same thing. I am on the edge of the prairie so my conditions are very similar to yours. Wind is a constant. The very hot dry summer winds are the difference between us and the other zone 6 & 7 growers. My Henon top kills too but it i...

Re: Bamboo for zone 6A

What part of Missouri are you? As mentioned above, any of the Ph Aureosulcatas will work here and Bissetii. The Aureosulcatas do get leaf bud damage and top kill some winters but they do consistently up size in spite of damage. Ph Stimulosa does very well here. I haven't had any damage on it even wi...
