Bambusa pervariabilis veridi, chungii, oldhamii: how fast?
... do they size up? In 8b/9 San Antonio? 85F+ hi and 70F low from mid-March to 1 October? I planted B. tuldoides in July 04, got 10 x 10 ft culms by December. In 05, 06, 15 x 15-20 ft culms In 07, wow, some much bigger monsters still coming up. Way faster than my Vivax. So, how fast are these 3 Bam...

RE: The Evolution of Bamboo: Less is More, and More is Less
In Jamaica, the guys tell me their bamboo, which was all B. vulgaris from what I could see and from they were using as construction struts, needs tons of water, and stand back. I did see a lot more B. vulgaris growing on the banks of mountain streams, HUGE clumps of 100s of culms, than I did anywher...

Most monitors and display cards have been AT LEAST 1024 x 768 for several years already. Even most portables have 14" screens for the last couple years, while most recen desktop displays are 17" or 19". 640 x 480 (aka Super VGA) as a max image size seems so mid 1990s, ie, just fine .....

Not speaking from experience, but it's kinda hard to beat this one for decorative value, visual interest, exoticism: http://bambooweb.info/ShowPictures2.php?BooID=82&Desc=&Loc=&Match=AND&Cat=*&s=0 you'll need to trim the branches below head height, and top the culms when they get...

RE: Resizing Photos for Web
re-sizing (by re-sampling) down always softens an image, makes it look soft focus vs. original. I always tell PSP to sharpen the downsized iimage slightly, it makes a difference. Another factor that messes up .jpg images is too high compression: the more compressed, the greater loss of quality and i...

I have Ph. nigra, henon, and Semi. fastuosa in 19-gal containers, and have a hard time keeping them looking healthy and vigorous. I doubt I've burned them with too much fert, but they drain so well and I water them so much in summer that any excess fert should have been rinsed out by now. They are a...

RE: Bambusa malingensis shows off its beauty
Would y'all say the B. mali. is more upright than textilis or tuldoides?
Does it size up quickly? My tuldoides at 2 years is now putting up 1.25" culms and 30 feet.

"what I saw when I took the image." Silly old man! You trust your visual memory? :) I don't even try to remember. I try to please myself within bounds of nearly realistic color. I like spicy ethnic foods with pronounced taste. I like my images pronounced with deeply saturated color, highly...

RE: Vivax Shoot Close-ups Using Automatic Camera Settings
I use PSP9 My usual tactics are using only PSP photo correction tools rather than the manual tools. 1. darken 10% by 1 - 3 times 2. PSP's "clarify", which isn't quit the same as simply increasing contrast. 3. Increase saturation. This of course makes screwed up color balance more obvious. ...

RE: Vivax Shoot Close-ups Using Automatic Camera Settings
It made a lot of sense with film to spend a lot of time on f/stop and exposure, but such tight control of params at point of exposure is not so critical with digital images where sophisticated post-processing is so easy. I never accept that an image as delivered from the digital camera is the best i...

I'm in NE San Antonio, and have a Ph. nigra "Daikokuchiku"/Folsom black in a 19 gal container for the past 20 months. Still short and bushy, it needs to go into the ground.

RE: Cracking ground---earthquake?
I know of two large stands of Ph aurea in San Antonio that get not watering and are very browned by our severe drought. I expect there will be (old, weak) culm death, but overall the stands will probably make it. However, I wonder if they would make through 3 or 4 years of this drought. Our drought ...
