Now seems bamboo-centric as before the pine swooped down in front of four bamboo blocking and shading a large portion from sight.

Letting in the light
But, not by design.
Last week as an atmospheric river approached a pine which had shaded a few fargesias fell down.

Re: Tropical bambusa - breaking branches
The attachment to culm seemed rock solid and tough(impossible) to remove when I had vulgaris in Hawaii.

Re: Clumping in the Columbia River Gorge
I would be cautious about 'Cana Prieta' as there are reports of blooming last year at Tradewinds in Gold Beach, OR. We only get a handful of hot dry days but Scabrida and robusta do not like them so unsure of what a steady dose would be like. Tessallatus here is very sun/wind resistant but you are i...

Re: Hardiness question (and website question)
Hola! I am a relative newbie with two questions: what is the most reliable way to determine a species hardiness (apart from purchasing and experimenting, obviously) and am I correct in that the search bar for the forums does not work or is it just user error? -Sinclair If you want to search within ...

Re: Fargesia scabrida shooting
Looking good john… Mine looks a bit odd for a 'Scabrida' at the moment as leaves are just beginning to fill and the lower buds opening to refill the bottoms after cleanup last year. today 05.04.19 09.50 AM.jpg soon after removing ~150 old culms that were forcing a severe diagonality( intentionallty ...

Re: Purple culms
I would think it's likely sun exposure as the purpleness is on the same side of various culms. The color may wrap around with time or even change significantly. Do you know your bamboo's name? Here is a pic of a red variety viewed from the east with a few culms in an initial purple phase on southern...

Everything has been slow to start this year but I checked a local clump in the neighborhood this morning and noticed a profusion of flowers.Garfster wrote:

Re: tallest clumping bamboo for NC Mountains zone 7A
I don't recall reading about any Fargesia flowering (except perhaps stress induced) lately. Latest Fargesia(nitida) I saw flowering was in ’17. I had seen flowers on it in ’15 & ’16 also, big 100+ gallon display pot at local nursery. Was still alive when I last saw it before they removed. Not s...

Re: tallest clumping bamboo for NC Mountains zone 7A
bigfoot - What was the source of the F. nitida seed? I ask as it flowered and seeded here in 2008, 2009 and 2010 & a few years earlier elsewhere. It is not expected to flower again until +/-2120. A few selections bloomed slightly later but I've heard of none flowering of late; in fact I haven't...

Re: Fargesia sp. 'Jiuzhaigou 1'
Wind-borne, if you had to choose, do you like the juiz 1, or the Genf, better? I really only had a place in mind for one plant, plus all of what I'm trying in my zone is highly experimental...lol. So I spent a long time deciding between the two. Obvious differences you have noticed in your time wit...
