Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?

They're not seedlings, but new growth from the existing rhizomes from the original grove. I can't bring myself to mow down any of it down until I see what happens with it. The new growth is completely inside the perimeter of the grove, so hopefully it's just hit a reset button. I did mow (cut) all t...

Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?

2 months after cutting nearly everything down with hopes of new growth, it looks promising. Lots of fresh green new plants popped up and have me crossing my fingers. These are about 2 feet tall.

Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?

I must really be getting old, I'm thinking that if I were you I'd consider hiring someone with a backhoe or trencher if the area could be accessed. Yeah, that would have been a good idea, but I'm a glutton for punishment sometimes. I sawed out everything except a narrow 2' strip along the fence for...

Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?

I just noticed more flowers on several culms, so I guess that settles it. I'd wager most every culm has flowered, so I imagine they've all got to be removed. Man this sucks. My saltwater pool backwash line exits just outside the grove, so I wonder if years of salt stressed/killed it. It doesn't dump...

Re: Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?

It's going to be a daunting task, for sure. I never got around to planting the seeds I harvested from it a few years ago. They're still in the fridge.

I wonder if cutting all the culms to the ground would give more energy to the root system to aid in recovery?

Will my P. Japonica recover after flowering a few years ago?

My 15ish year-old grove of P. Japonica flowered like crazy the Summer of 2020 and has looked terrible ever since. At first I was excited to gather some seeds, but the plants lost most of their leaves and flowered again the following year. So far this year, there's no signs of improvement. No new lea...

Re: P. Japonica 'Arrow Bamboo' seeds -trade for clumping bam

Sorry, I keep having issues linking photos to this site. I thought Google or OneDrive would suffice, but problems persist. It's likely me, though. Is short-term storage in the fridge considered the best way to keep them for a few weeks? They're in a little plastic bottle with a silica pack for now. ...

Re: P. Japonica 'Arrow Bamboo' seeds -trade for clumping bam

Nope. No clue if they're viable or not...

It's the first time this grove has flowered, so I've not had a chance to try any. I collected another 20 yesterday that had dropped to some sheets I laid out on the ground.

They're plumpers! Image

P. Japonica 'Arrow Bamboo' seeds -trade for clumping bamboo?

I've collected about 50 seeds from my 14 year old grove of flowering Pseudosasa japonica and wonder if anyone would like to trade a piece of clumping bamboo for them? I'm in Northwest Georgia and have had good luck with Alphonse Karr, so I'd love to try something else. https://photos.app.goo.gl/QUHe...

Re: Bamboo vs Mint the Epic Battle begins

i don't mean to hijack but this may be the right time to ask. grasshoppers destroy my mint every spring. it just can't get a foothold because the little demons keep the leaves stripped. cilantro tea sprayed every few days works great but its too much of a hassle because of the distance from my house...

Re: How can I improve the growth of shaded Rubromarginata?

Yeah, you're right David. It just needs more sunlight. I'll borrow a 'saw-on-a-pole' from my parents and see what I can reach from the ground before firing up the husqvarna. I don't want to mix different types in the same area but thank you for the offer of bissetii. I wish I had somewhere else to p...

Re: How can I improve the growth of shaded Rubromarginata?

I have a lot of rubro, my one comment would be that running a soaker hose would take much of the week to water an adequate volume it would seem, soaker hose has a very low volume flow. yeah, i'm beginning to think that hose doesn't do as good a job as I hoped for. I figured the plants didn't need a...

Re: How can I improve the growth of shaded Rubromarginata?

Out of curiosity, how tall is the bamboo now, and what is your goal? I want enough of a screen to walk through my front yard without my across-the-road neighbors watching me. (I have some wacko neighbors) The tallest is about 8 feet tall from this year's growth but they haven't stretched out more t...

How can I improve the growth of shaded Rubromarginata?

I have a 150' line of Rubromarginata that I planted August 2006. They're spaced 3'-6' apart and have a soaker hose underneath at least 6 inches of cypress mulch and whatever leaves have piled up since then. I give them a few overnight soakings every spring/summer when there's no rain. They're under ...
