Re: Fargesias on the Nova Scotian coast
An update on Fargesia sp. 'Scabrida' in full sun on the NS coast. Planted in autumn 2013 as a very weak small culmed 1 gallon it has surprised everyone with its hardiness, red culm sheaths and graceful habit. Hard to photograph as it's planted about 1m deep in a gully that is now imopossible for me ...

Re: Any tips on moving a small F nitida?
Given the size & lack of roots it might be best to wait till Spring. Unless you feel you can dig all withoiut dirupting the rootball.

Re: Fargesia scabrida shooting
Sorry wind-borne I missed your post. Yes that's the same one. And here is the 'Scabrida' yesterday. Lost some top leaves last winter but no stem damage. The lowest temp was 7F. No snow and constant cold with many lows to 12F and rarely above freezing for 2 months; the ground froze down a yard. The w...

Phyllostachys primotina
A photo of Phyllostachys arcana (primotina) at Jens' in Copenhagen. It flowered in 2013 at Pez' in Munich. She sent seeds to Steffen in Heidlberg. Steffen send seeds to me in Nova Scotia. I in turn sent seeds to nurseryman Mogens in Gedser, Denmark who grew seedling. Jens got a plant from Mogens. Qu...

Fargesia apicirubens DabaShan #2
Winter started in late January with bare ground and persistent cold. The lowest was -14c (+7F ). The frost went down at least a meter and has been extremely slow to thaw since late March. And yet Fargesia apicirubens DabaShan #2 looks better than it ever has. It faces north west, new culms are not t...

Tarzanus - I've edited my post. I wonder if ocimum_nate got seeds from his bizarre flowering in 2012?

Re: tallest clumping bamboo for NC Mountains zone 7A
bigfoot - What was the source of the F. murielae seed? I ask as it flowered and seeded here in 1998, 1999 and 2000 & a few years earlier elsewhere. It is not expected to flower again for +/-90 years. I've heard of none flowering of late; in fact I haven't heard of any Fargesia sp. flowering sinc...

Likely the cold fog prevents rolling here.

Re: GROWING CLUMPING BAMBOO SOUTHWEST IDAHO
It's not exactly dry here, fog abounds but not much in the way of summer rains, You might try Fargesia sp. 'Scabrida'. Here it's shown locally within 100ft of the North Atlantic Ocean. It's been surprisingly hardy and very fast growing. Picture was taken last week.

Re: Rare clumpers
F. nitida is perfectly hardy here in Nova Scotia Z6 and I have seen it thriving in Z5 to our north in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. Cool summers, especially cool nights, are imperative.

Re: Fargesia demissa 'Gerry'
Kailey - Part sun might be wiser for 'Gerry' in your area due to the lower summer humidity. Iain is in a cooler and more humid Scottish climate, I suspect it would take full sun here too. Maurice Foster of the RHS was here two weeks ago and he could not believe how humid it is here, this despite a d...

Re: Fargesia scabrida shooting
Fargesia sp. 'Scabrida' just shooting now. It had a few fried leaves at the top caused by an extremely brief low of 0F back in late December. Best rated at +5F as it did not like 0F though it has tolerated that without burn in the past. No tip damage. Looking fairly good though. For me it has the qu...

Re: SE Idaho, zone 5, what to grow?
Fargesia J#1 would be ideal as it loses its leaves in winter. However I have no idea if it would toleratre alkaline soil.
