I think Bissetii would be the best for screening. If you're concerned about the barrier, try growing it in a raised bed.

My Bissetii still have not shot this year. I am in Zone 5. I expect new shoots in the 2 weeks. Perhaps by earlier summer I will know if mine will flower. But even if it doesn't flower this year, it's due date is not far.

Just to give an update. I decided to let it grow and I am glad I did. Even though the shoots started off very close, they eventually spreaded out near the top gave each other space. And luckily, the one shoot which I trimmed grew fully. Turns out the 1 inch tip that I trimmed consisted of all sheaths.

Are you sure it was 2005/6 and not 2015/16?
That means your bamboo have been flowering for 16/17 years. That's unheard of for me. Mine flowered and died in 2 years, but I had a small specimen.

Update: So, my bamboos were practically top killed (except for Nigra that I tarped that were stripped of by mice). Some culms do manage to releaf a little bit, but it's probably less than 0.1%. It's not much, but every leaf counts at this point. I'll wait until the shooting season is done before cle...

Ok, I will update in a month or two. This size shoot should end up with a culm 3 to 5 feet tall. By then, it should be distinguishable between Moso and Propinqua.

I wish it was Moso. But no, the shoot is not hairy. And as I said, the leaves of the existing culm are small. Moso have large leaves even as a seedling.
